I was just running everest ultimate trial and one of the things it shows is the battery wear. And it says that the wear is already 29%. The designed is 88800 mwh while now it is 62515 mwh. The battery is brand new and I already did a calibration the first time I used my computer. The HP battery check says pass. So is this normal to have so much wear already?
Thanks

How long have you owned the laptop?
-
owned for a week or so. used for 3 days. I am just calibrating it again. I already drained it and it lasted 2:40 min. For a while I was just surfing the web with 30% brightness (hp recommened power plan). At around 2 hours (30 battery left) i started to do some homework in word on power saver, wlan off, and dimmest screen. It turned itself off at around 7% battery life left. So I guess i could reach 3 hours if I was in power saver with no wlan and dim screen.
I just checked it again and now it says 31% wear. So I will check again when the battery is full.
Thanks -
I was just reading through the dummy guide for batteries and it gave some good tips. I thought that it was best to totally discharge the battery but it is better not to. But still losing 31% of the battery is excessive on a BRAND NEW computer

this is interesting... i did not know that batteries could wear this fast.. I installed everest and found out that my battery has 25% wear and is running at 66304 mWh instead of 8800 mWh.
I've owned my dv9500 for 3 months now and i really find it hard to believe that batteries can wear this fast! is it possible its a misread from everest? My computer is on for a good 20hrs a day but still i cant believe its 25% worn already.. what do you guys think about this? is this normal?

I checked mine and its 25% wear on mine too, my computer is also about 2 months old. And my computer is plugged to the AC adapter about 98% of the time, so I charged the battery correct when I first got it. :\

Though 31% for a brand new battery is even worse. I was reading through some other threads here on the site and they say that having it plugged in all the time with the battery in is also bad because of the trick charge and the heat and such.
A possible cause for the high wear is that the ACPI is screwed up and misreading it. Because another thread said that someone was getting more and more wear till he disabled the auto-off when battery is at XX% and then it lasted like 40min past when windows said 0%. But in another thread it said that emptying a lithium ion battery to much will make it wear faster and if it hits zero then the battery is a goner (though the battery has firmware that should prevent that). So I am not really sure what to do here, guess just hope that the battery check fails soon and get a new one.
Just do a search of the forums to find some threads about batteries. -
I believe this is a misread. When I first received my laptop I did the same thing and after maybe a week of use it showed as 36% wear. I called HP and complained and they replaced it free but the new one they sent had the same reading. so I believe it is just some error in the readings.

Battery wear ratings are very inaccurate, and highly dependent on the position of the stars.

EVEREST is not the right to tool for checking battery wear. I've been at stuck at 29% since last time I checked with EVEREST and it has been almost a year now on my DV6000T. So don't worry about it. If it lasts you 2+, your battery is fine.

brianstretch Notebook Virtuoso
Back in the zv5000 days MobileMeter would read battery wear level accurately, but every HP notebook since then has given inaccurate readings, sometimes wildly so. The HP battery check tool, while not terribly precise, does appear to work.

Thanks.
Also looking through the everest I found that I have the santa rosa chipset (though mine had napa), a samsung screen and quite a good quality western digital hdd. And I just got my webcam working fully now. So I am really happy with this notebook. And hopefully the battery will last quite a while.
