i would just like to upgrade the hard drive to a 7200 rpm one. Is it wise to do since i might have a defective 8400 and the 7200 rpm would run hotter? would there be a noticable different between the 5400 i have now and the 7200?
if theres no problem, which would be the best qulity drive around? size doesnt matter since i had 2 external hard drives. i just want speed and reliablity, ive had 2 laptop hard drives fail on me. best buy or tiger direct would be good choices since i live like 10 mins from both stores. i'll consider online if its a good deal..
thanks for any help

I would go with a WD 7200rpm from Newegg. WD's are rather reliable, and i've never had one fail on me.
There is a definite performance change from 5400 rpm to 7200rpm when it comes to storing/accessing memory. Paging files also tend to be slightly accessed faster. Overall, there isn't too big a difference, but 7200 rpm does create a lot more heat, so take care to back up frequently.

I second the WD 320gb Black. Its quiet and very fast. There is one a *bit* faster, but its louder and runs a bit hotter. The WD is a great all around performer.
(Queue the 7K320 fanboy....) -

would that be any good? keeping in mind i just want performance and reliability.. -
by the reviews, it looks to be good.

Yes. That is a very nice drive with plenty of speed if you dont need the extra storage space.

thanks for your help guys.
one more question, is the heat difference so much that it could damage the video card, or is it negligible? -
Nah. Youre not going to damage anything, at most it just heats the case up a degree or two.

alright, just got it. i'll install it now and report laters. wish me luck lol
best 7200 rpm hard drive
