I have a DV6-2170us. I would like to know the easiest/cheapest way to maximize my file transfers over my home network. The house is wired with a gigabit ethernet infrastructure, but the HP only has 100Mbs controller. I would like to get best speed possible for large media file transfers/backups.

    My questions are:
    1. Can I add gigabit ethernet to the laptop somehow?
    2. Would it be easier to just add an eSATA card to my media server desktop PC?
    3. Should I just replace my 802.11g with a 802.11n router?

I'm rather new to home networking, so I apologize if this is a simple situation to solve. I've done some reading but am starting to get confused about what my actual options are and the possible benefits/drawbacks of each. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Interesting that i5-540 equipped laptop still has only 10/100Mbit connection. At least so say all the HP links I found so far and there's no Service Manual at HP website.

802.11n doesn't offer better speed than 100Mbit wired connection in real life, so rather get expresscard gigabit card for your laptop to do the data transfers. I believe your laptop still has expresscard slot? :)

so this is how much of a laptop newb i am. I didn't know what expresscard was until your post. I start messing around with a spot above the SD card reader and behold! Out pops what looks like a placeholder for a expresscard 54 (according to the pics on wikipedia). So now I need to find one. NewEgg doesn't seem to have any....

That is correct, they use the same electrical slot, so performance is the same.

Ok, seems like there are a lot out there. Any brands to stay away from?
