    How about updating the bios?

What do you mean by "the bios won't let him configure the new size"? Do you mean he can't go into the bios and enter HDD info like on a desktop, or do you mean that the system won't detect the HDD correctly? The N150 should be able to use a 40-60GB HDD without any problems. The BIOS should automatically detect the new larger HDD and it should just work without any chnages made to the BIOS. I have an old Toshiba (approx 4 years old) and I'm capable of using a 40GB HDD without any problems. Just plugged it in and installed the OS. Didn't have to touch the BIOS at all.

after trying 4 times over a couple of days, the laptop finally detected the drive at the right size.

thanks for the encouragement to keep trying. [ :)]
