I've had my new DV3 for about a week. It's great. I was surfing the web successfully for like 6 hours (i am a geek okay) when suddenly I lost the wireless adapter. Specifically, the indicator light showed that it had turned off the wireless card and it would not manually turn on again no matter what I did. The adapter did show up in device manager but was clearly not working or perhaps not getting power? I called tech support. They had me uninstall the device and reboot. It reinstalled itself on reboot and everything was fine. I asked the support tech what was the deal? He mumbled something about windows updates. I told him I had automatic updates turned off - he said sure whatever.

Well the same issue a few hours later so I thought I'd try using a restore point since I had been removing bloatwhere, installed apps etc for the initial few days. This worked! Till just now - I was online few a few hours and BAM - no wireless adapter. I tried looking through event logs but there is so much info there I don't know what to look for.

Is windows updating itself without my permission and screwing up my wireless driver? Is this something with power settings? It happens when running on batter and plugged in. Help... Restoring every few hours is so silly...

ps. i'm starting to become suspicious of the hp healthcheck type services running around. Is it possible one of these starts up and starts messing things up?

Well, when i bought my DV5, the HP Health Check thingy did indeed help update my drivers. Its only problem was that it would crash every minute so i still had to install everything by hand. :p I found life so much better without it.

Simple solution that always works: If you don't need it, remove it. :) Also remove the wireless assistant, that could also be a source of trouble.
