I believe this problem exists with other models.. I have the dv2000z series. After a year it suddenly only work intermittently then hardly. I have a feeling that one of the Microsoft updates is conflicting with the driver. First it happened with Vista x64, Vista x86 and XP Media Edition (I loaded all those OS in my laptop.. individually). Kinda lame HP hasn't found a solution and Broadcom drivers are totally useless. I went ahead and bought a USB wireless N d-link and is working perfectly. I think I'll wait for SP1 for Vista before I use it again. For now XP MCE is adequate. Too bad my RAM isn't used to it's full extent.. I have 4gb RAM for use with Vista x64.

I have the same issue. HP isn't doing much as far as I can tell. I am going through tech support again this week.

Jim Kahler (Director of warranty and support for HP North America Consumer PC business) stated that HP will extend the factory warranty for affected units.

A HP Total Care representative recently posted the following on the HP message board describing the problem in greater detail.

My advice is to simply contact HP and send it in for service.

I did update the BIOS on my laptop and it doesn't work. I also re-installed the original BIOS and that didn't work either. I was planning to change my Broadcom card to an Intel but I read that it's not compatible with AMD chips. Hope HP and MS would collaborate and find a solution. The wifi card worked for a year until the updates were installed, so the signal amplitude wasn't the problem. The motherboard is the same when it was working!

When my Compaq v3000z conked out after a month and sent it for repair my case manager sent me an HPdv2138xx replacement because they couldn't find out what was wrong with the Compaq. I did mention to him that my 5 year old Averatec hasn't given me any problems. I guess he felt bad. The problem with the Compaq was that the screen suddenly blacked out for no reason. The blue lights were on but no screen. Looked for the beep codes but couldn't find anything that matched so I figured it was the motherboard. I find that speaking to them calmly and explaining your problem briefly and to the point is the best way of communicating. Do not make sarcastic remarks about the quality of their products. Also listen to their instructions and answer only what's asked of you. Let them figure out the problem for you and throwing zingers isn't going to help. Write down all the numbers they give you and the instructions on how to send your laptop back. If it's still under warranty they will send you a prepaid box via UPS.

If a case manager happens to give you a call don't say anything negative and listen to what they have to say. In the end they will offer you a replacement and sometimes give you a few "extras". Remember, being nice will get you more than being argumentative with them all the way!

I just arranged to have my wife's dv6000z repaired under the Limited Warranty Service Enhancement offer from HP. It has the right serial number to qualify and I had already updated the bios. The 866 number in the announcement is answered in India. The first person I talked to tried to tell my that the machine did not qualify because it was a CTO. No such thing was said in the announcement. Then I talked to her supervisor who after a lot of checking finally agreed to take it under the one-time offer but warned me that there would be a billing adjustment if they found anything else wrong. He made it sound as if he was doing me a very special favor. The call took more than thirty minutes. India needs to learn more about quality customer service. Fixing problems should go smoothly and quickly and leave the customer feeling that HP is doing everything it can to fix the issue. Try to avoid the 866 number in the announcement or be prepared for a lot of insisting on your part.

After checking that link last month, this was the first problem listed, so it sounds like it finally caught up with my notebook... My wireless quit. I called and their sending me a fedex box to ship it to them. Where is that main post on this problem?

    Step 3: Identify the symptoms
If your computer’s model number and serial number are listed above, the series is within the specified range, and the notebook PC experiences one or more of the symptoms listed below, contact HP during the Duration of the HP Limited Warranty Service Enhancement to determine whether you are eligible for a free repair.

The notebook does not detect wireless networks and the wireless adapter is not detected in the Device Manager.
