The nc8230 that I ordered on the 'build it yourself' program, while it existed, arrived today, almost three weeks later than promised. That's the good news.
The bad news is that it still has manufacturing test software installed. The software fails the first test (bluetooth) and then aborts. Furthermore, it hangs when trying to shut down, and doesn't run on the battery at all.
The Windows XP COA on the bottom looks like it was peeled off another machine and stuck on this one, and there are a couple of scratches in the case in the opening where the touchpad is mounted.
If this is typical of the build-it-yourself program, it is no wonder why they shut it down. It looks like the group that puts these things together is thoroughly incompetent.
I am going to give HP an earfull tomorow morning, and then send this POS back.

Sorry to hear that your notebook is DOA from day one. Looks like they possibly sent you a testing unit rather than a new one. It's also funny that you mentioned this because my unit (NX8220) which was bought in Canada, came with fingerprints on the top cover and 2 on the LCD itself. Plus the glidepad was dirty. I was assured that this was a brand new unit. Although my unit is not as bad as yours, it's still pretty disappointing that this overall quality assurance is this low. If I were you, I'd go and demand a new unit and also a discount for this kind of quality.
