The HDX 16 looks truly awful and vulgar, just has no style to it, rather like some yanks
nor Blu ray write option, runs hotter than the FW screen is poorer than the FW and generally just not in the same class as the FW

No, you can get better specs and pay same price for sony. I know cuz I was looking at both and I maxed speced both. Plus HP has tv tuner and backlite keyboard, which is not on the Sony. Also it has better graphics card. I saved $900 off with the coupon. My specs are:
# • Upgrade to Genuine Windows Vista Ultimate with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
# • Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T9800 (2.93GHz)
# • 8GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
# • 320GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
# • 1GB Nvidia GeForce GT 130M
# • 16.0" diagonal High Definition HP Ultra BrightView Infinity Display (1920x1080p)
# • Lightscribe Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer
# • Webcam + Fingerprint Reader with HP Imprint Finish (Fluid)
# • Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card with Bluetooth
# • 50% OFF!! HP Integrated HDTV Hybrid Tuner
# • Full Size Backlit Keyboard
# • One 6 Cell and One 12 Cell Lithium Ion Batteries
For about $2500 after coupon. Same price as maxed out Sony but they don't have tv tuner or backlight keyboard or 2 batteries or 2 year warranty, and graphics card sucks. -

hi i run my destop non stop 20days at a strech..all i do is browse, dwnload & watch movies..so now i amplanning to get an vaio..so can any one say
1.how much time i can use my vaio fw continuesly?
2.hw much time u hav used urs continusly? -
You can use it 24/7 for months with no problems. That is valid for any laptop.
-
Technically you could do exactly this. However I would advise against it.
The performance from laptops nowadays is getting bigger and bigger, but the size of the laptops themselves is not. As a result, laptops tend to run quite hot, depending largely on what you are using it for and obviously the model, any cooling you have and where you are using it.
For this reason, I'd suggest you at least turn it off whilst you go to bed or are not at home. You'll extend the life of your laptop if you do this.
I would also suggest looking into a laptop cooler, have a search on these forums - there are some great guides written - I've given a link to one below.

Sorry, I realise that doesn't specifically answer your question; but I guess it's not one that is commonly asked. -

There is much more stress in the heating and cooling cycles than in the continuous use of a laptop, provided the CPU and GPU temps are at their norms. If you are pushing both and the temps are way up then there is increased stress. But idling overnight while you sleep, puts no stress on it at all, especially if you set the HD to power down after a period of non use.

I know what I speak as the sony was one of the 3 laptops I researched 3 months on, those being the Dell XPS16, HP HDX16, Sony FW series.
FW has maybe better build quality as its made of magnesium chassis vs. HDX16 plastic one. Plus its a Sony.
However, it lacks backlite keyboard, TV Tuner, and overpriced due to the current YEN vs Dollar exchange rate. I maxed both out at $3000 for sony, and $3200 for the HP. BUT after 30% coupon, it came to $2,500.........with 2 year warranty, TV tuner, and backlight keyboard. I got my facts straight. Sony might have better build quality but HPs got better specs and price. Go with HP FTW..... -
Ultra brite view 1366 X 768
Ultra Brite HD 1920 X 1080 but not as nice as the Sony FW HD screen with the double lamp technology. Oh and the HDX is also double lamp the same as the FW
In the USA you do have four options, only one is Blu ray Read/Write the other two blu ray options are ROM only.
In the UK we do NOT get the read Write Blu ray option, not even on the latest HDX-16 1200 model, so again my quote is correct.
When comparing against my BRITISH Sony and the two companies offerings in the UK, I stand by my original post, The HDX HD screen is not as good, there is no Blu ray read write option.
So it is you who needs to get their facts straight before shouting the odds. -

True, but its nice to have. And if you've every typed in the dark you would appreciate it. To see the keyboard with the display, you would have to set it on brightest level, thus negating the battery saved from no backlit keyboard, because you're using highest display brightness.
Anyway, you can turn it off. -
so any body sujst me good laptop coolers for vaio fw...,stylish carry case or back that u use for ur fw -
hi, guyz
can all you tell wat carry case or backpack and coolpads that u use for ur vaio fw..with product links...
tell me which one u recommend for me........
a total review of cool pads r given here
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=304671 -
I'm probably going to grab this sleeve for my FW when I get it. I like the idea of just using my backpack and using the sleeve to protect. That solution may not be for everyone so your mileage may vary.
The FW series certainly does seem like an anomaly so I don't know of any particular case or cooler that works well for the dimensions. The good news is that there seems to be an increasing number of 16" notebooks hitting the market.
Until they make a cooling pad that fits the FW (or maybe there already is one?; I'd be interested in seeing how it works), I would probably just get one of those lap desks. That is hardly the best alternative, though, since they are often so bulky.
Good luck with your search for compatible accessories! If you find any killer additions, let me know. I recently ordered my FW so I'll be interested in seeing what would help maximize the experience. -
I do not use Sony FW but I am using sony Z.
I never turn off my laptop maybe about a few months already.
There is no problem keep your computer on at all times.
Everypart of your laptop has a life span such as CPU, memory, HD, the LCD and others. The more you turn on the laptop longer, the shorter the life span will become.
If you are planning to keep the laptop for about more than 7 years, than do shut the laptop off while not in use otherwise, leave it on. -
The neoprene case fits nicely - but it is a soft/stretchy cover for the laptop. If you're looking for a protective cover that won't provide much. Have used on short trips in a backpack but was careful. I use the Targus messenger bag when traveling via train/car for extended trips. Fits very nicely and offers reasonable protection for the laptop.

Second, did you bother to read what I wrote? I was trying to explain to you that there is more stress from heating and cooling cycles than from normal use that you mentioned so it was safe to just leave it on all of the time. One thing to note is that watching movies CAN actually put significant stress on the GPU (it depends on the format of the movie), so you might want to monitor the temps there. But once you are done watching a movie the chip cools right down. I don't know what video chip you have in the FW but many of the Nvidia chips have a defect that manifests itself after a period of time. The defect comes about because of the very heating and cooling cycles I mentioned. That causes stress cracks in the chips substrate and cannnot be repaired, it requires a complete mother board replacement. So ANYTHING you can do to eliminate temperature swings is a good thing!

As many posters stated, keep your laptop cool and well ventilated would help in running your comp for a long period of time. Just remember, notebooks are not desktops, there is not so much room inside for cooling, and parts are more sensitive to break down.
cheers ... -

Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
Some estimates from Notebookcheck: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Dell-Studio-XPS-16-Notebook.14431.0.html
I'd say the "practical test" is probably equivalent to what you'll see for (1), about 100 minutes. It probably depends on the quality of your video files. DVD playback already drops to 95 minutes, so I bet (2) will be even shorter. (3) is probably the equivalent of the full load test, about an hour, and (4) is about two hours.
So yeah, while these are estimates, the general consensus seems to be that the battery doesn't last very long. Of course, I'm sure it depends on your specs as well; lower-power options will obviously lead to longer battery life. -
can we add another hard disk internally....
-
Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
Not in the conventional sense; there is no space by default for a second HDD in the SXPS 16. If you really wanted that second drive, you could try using a mini-PCIe SSD or even an ExpressCard SSD. You could also try removing your optical drive, finding some adapters, and DIY'ing a second drive into the ODD bay.
-
the xps 16 only fits one HDD internally. you'll have to make do with external drives, or swap the internal drive for a larger model.

i am very confused..i wanna buy a laptop..plz sugesst hdx16 or vaio fw or shall i go for dell studio xps 16
