The 9600GT in the HDX uses DDR2, I believe, so it will be slightly slower than the 3650 in the FW and the 3670 in the SXPS16. The 3670 is just a factory-overclocked 3650, so it is a bit better (but will run hotter, contibuting to the SXPS16's overall notoriously high operating temperatures).

The FW is also the lightest of the bunch, if that matters.

The FW's screen is very nice, although the SXPS16 with the RGBLED display has also received very high marks.

Yeah, sorry, I forgot to insert the link.

Title: great multimedia lappy with serious flaws Date: April 24, 2009
Pros1. 2.1 speakers and subwoofer: its amazing, the best feature of this 1" thin lappy. its like you are in a home theatre when you plug in a pair of earbuds.
    2. lcd screen: rgb led is unbelievable in color reproductions, it lives up to the claim of 16.7m colors. and samsung lcd is known for its clarity. the screen is crisp clear, vivid.
    3. ati 3670: it scores 4400 on 3d mark06, thats the equivalent of nvidia 8700m gt, also teh display ability on colors is similar to nvidia 8xxx series.
    4. 256gb samsung ssd: its 10-15% faster than a 7200 rpm 16mb cache hard drive.
    5. backlit keyboard is a good addition, you can see the keys easily in low lit environments.
Cons1. lcd screen: its a low light lcd screen, notebbookcheck.net has the test result of 270 max nit. its only slightly brighter than ccfl ones tops at 250 nit. there is a brightness control setting in the bios. i do believe dell lower the lcd brightness to save the battery life.
    2. battery life: dell advertises it as a 6 cell , but it only has 4 cell capacity.
on high performance at full brightness , battery lasts pathetic 75 minutes. studio 17 with 9 cell lasts close to 3 hours on high full brit.
    3. e2e plastic cover : it does nothing good for this computer. this plastic "protector" makes lcd screen more glaring, and collects a ton of dust in the meanwhile. it should be removed period, addition by subtraction.
    4. bios and drivers signing: we need new bios specifically designed for studio 16, not something just copied from xps m1730. one that has downclock ability when temp is out of control .
IDT sound driver is a mess up , it must be removed to get speakers to work properly. also touchpad would need a new driver too.
    5. heat problem: acpi temp reaches 55c on internet browsing, sometimes over 60c when vent is blocked. thats no good by any means , especially with a 25w p series montevina chip.
my studio 17 with 35w t9400 reaches 45c when browsing internet. but i think heat is still manageable on studio 16, if you buy a 9 cell battery to prop up the bottom and a quality notebook cooler to go with it.
you shall be able to dial down the temp to 75c when computer is fully loaded while gaming. i would advice ppl not to upgrade to 35w t series cpus, definitely no mobile quads.

Additional Thoughtsstudio xps 16 is by far the best multimedia laptop on the market, it provides great visual and audio enjoyment.
but dell needs to correct those problems i have mentioned: 1. a lcd at 270 nit/500:1 contrast ratio aint good enough for a premium/high performance product.
    2. e2e plastic cover has to be removed.
    3. bios/new bios with downclock ability and brightness setting at 24 not 16.

HP has them about once a month. You just missed one in April. Don't just rely on this site cuz they missed the March. one. Do a google search for "hp coupons". You will see many results. Check with all of them. Eventually you'll find one but wait for the 30% off one. I followed the coupons since Feb. By my calculations, the next one will be in middle of May. Oh, the websites might not show up if you are using google india. Go to google.com instead.

Yeah I too was considering those 3 but the HP won out with the best graphics card and the huge coupon.

It has either the 6cell or 9cell battery. I have both.

    1. I watched a 2 hour streaming movie online with the 9cell and after there was still 30min left.

    2. I have ironman on bluray but never finished watching so dunno.

    3. I played crysis warhead with max settings on 6cell battery. It lasted 1.5 hours.

    4. On powersaver and screen on min brightness, the 6cell lasted 2.5 hours. The 9cell = 3.5 hours.

The HDX 16 doesn't use QuickPlay - it uses a newer program called HP MediaSmart, which is like QP but has other features. And it runs in WMC.

The picture quality is pretty good if you set it up right - you can literally set it up to send cable data to your HDX, change cable channels if you've got a remote, etc.

Most HDX owners (20" Dragon like mine, the 18 or 16) use the HP Rollercase, which is a custom Targus case made specifically for HP, with an HP logo on it. It can be used as a rollercase, backpack or carried. It has a slip-in sleeve for the system, plenty of space for the batteries and cables, and room to spare for clothes if you're going out of town. It fits well into an overhead bin on a plane.

The other one I and other HDX owners use (though it's probably a little big for the 16) is the Dicota Multigiant. It's a traditional notebook case, and will fit up to a 20" system. It can hold a lot of stuff.

The Multigiant you can get from the Dell online store for around 50 bucks, more at other places. The rollercase is more, around 99 now I think, but it's worth it. Well built and specifically made for the larger HDX's, originally for the HDX Dragons but as I said is great for the 18's and 16's too.

You don't need one - all HDX's run cooler than most other notebooks in the HP notebook line, so no one who owns an HDX uses a cooler. The fact that they run so cool is one of the main selling points for getting an HDX.

If it's running a bit hot then it needs to be cleaned out - check the intakes on the bottom of the unit and the exhaust vents at each rear corner, and blow them out good with a can of air. You can also open the top cover to get at the fans / filters - it doesn't take much, just look at the manual.

Always make sure it's on a flat surface when using it so that the intakes on the bottom are clear. You can check your internal temps with HWMonitor (CPUID.com). As I said, the HDX line arguably runs cooler than any other HP notebook.

i am planning to buy a hdx 16,while customizing i found that
1.the network card with bluetooth costs $25 more then the same without bluetooth.an external blutooth dongle costs juz about $7.is there any other advantages of the internal one...i mean speed etcc..
2.i am very economic so i wnt for the 720p ie 1366 resolution instead of 1920.now my doubt is about the infy display which cost 25$.actually wats that infy diplay.wat r its cons and pros.is it worth the money

Yeah - change the RAM and get the 8gb DDR3 upgrade and the 130 GPU. Unless you're running Photoshop CS4, the GPU isn't a big issue, but you need the 130 to get the DDR3 upgrade. The extra RAM is worth it on a 64 bit system. I'd also get the Blu-Ray Burner - those things are hot right now and most systems don't have them yet.

Get the Backlit Keyboard also - the letters wear off the most used keypads after a few months if you use it a lot.

For a case, get the HP Rollercase, but get it AFTER you get your system, along with a Quickdock or any other minor accessories. You usually get a few coupons from HP that are worth a couple of hundred that you can use in the online store. Use it to get either a case or an extra battery and AC Adapter. The extras are nice if you're like me and don't want to break down everything just to go mobile occasionally.

You'll get an estimated delivery date when you order, based on your shipping preference. They assemble in China, but I got my HDX Dragon about a week ahead of the estimated delivery date. Most people usually get theirs ahead of time, so they're either really good or they pad the date to make it LOOK like they're good.

Even with the coupon (which I had the ability to use), I still went with the Dell SXPS16. It was really tough between the HP and Dell, but the SSD, and the build quality I saw with the HP, really sent me towards the Dell. I sure as hell haven't regretted it one bit. ; )

The notebook that comes with your system explains how to set it up.

SPDIF is an old holdover from the old driver - the newer ones say HDMI, but it doesn't matter since you setup 5.1 from the Speakers/Redirected Headphone icon.

    1. On the Sound panel, select Speaker/Redirected Headphone.

    2. Connect your external speakers to the rear SPDIF (mini-phone jack) outs . If you click on the Properties button at the bottom it will show you which jacks to use for external audio, and which Surround Speaker goes in which jack.

    3. Back on the Sound panel, click on the Configure button at the bottom. Select 5.1 Surround, then Next. Go through the procedure until finished.

Once you plug in your speakers to the output SPDIF's it automatically routes the audio to the external speakers.

Don't forget to change your configuration back to 2 speakers when done.
