i buddy of mine has an original windows vista disk that he bought from best buy. I was wondering if i would be able to use it instead of an anytime upgrade dvd to do a clean install. Of course i would NOT be using his key.

Okay get the update Cd and install it but do not enter the product CD code this will give you a 30 day trial version of the OS. Once it is up and running install the upgrade Cd again and this time enter the product key this will give you a clean install. I have not tried this but I got it from Maximum PC where the guy was trying to upgrade from XP to Vista but bought a Upgrade Cd by accident(he wanted a clean install) so they gave him this option. Try it and then PM me please. I will not give you garranties but this is all I know.

I'm pretty sure the Anytime Upgrade disc and the OEM Vista discs are one and the same. It's just that the OEM disc comes with a new key.

I don't think there is a difference in the data between the discs. Only difference is the holographic label on the OEM Vista disc. You're buying a CD-Key for the $159, not a copy of a DVD.

This method is for working around the system if you only have an "upgrade" license. It's completely unnecessary for a laptop because you already have a full license to Vista that came with the system.

    Exactly.

ok i used my friends disc and the clean install worked great! soooo much faster!!

to confirm you CAN use the regular vista disc even if its someone else's as long as you keep a copy of your license as explained in orev's clean install instructions.
