Ive read the excellent reviews here, the comparison review of the two models, and went to my local computer store and checked out the two models in person.

I had a better first impression of the v2000 mainly due to its over all design and touchpad. I found that the shiny black plastic lining around the keyboard of the dv1000 fairly poor in quality (scratches and button quality)

some concerns that i have regarding the dv1000

    1. for all the dv1000 owners out there, how usefull is the remote? I though that it would be very nice to have a remote for streaming net music and attach my wireless headphones to it but beyond that, the screen is too small to really need a remote for watching dvd's and such.

    2. can quickplay play mp3 cds?

    3. how long can the battery last (6cell) by playing media through quickplay?

    4. the dv1000 seems alot more popular over the v2000. for the dv1000 owners what other features swayed your decision from the v2000, or was it entirely the quickplay and remote?

    5. how common is the high pitch buzz a few people reported and how annoying is it? how common is the cmos problem?

concerns that i have regarding the v2000

    1. will i regret not having quickplay and remote because a preference for the design

    2. any other reasons why v2000 seems overlooked for the dv1000

    general concerns

    1. how poor is the graphics on the two machines. im mainly purchasing a notebook for word processing and network monitoring so the size, wieght and price of these two models are perfect but it would be nice to slip in a game of warcraft3 tft. ive come to terms with not playing any of my perfered games on it but if anyone knows if warcraft would run at a decent level that would be great.

    2. linux compatibility on the two models

Well, I was debating between the two for awhile also but decided to go with the Compaq v2000. Ordered it Dec. 10th and the est. ship date is Dec. 20th (which I'm hoping that it will arrive sooner). For me the deciding factors were the stories of problems with the dv1000- one side of the keyboard and touchpad feels loose, the clock issue, the inverted colors at angle, high pitch buzz sound, and the LED lights behind the icons look cheap (again these are my personal opinions). And I spent way to much on my widescreen TV in my living to care if I can watch two DVD's back to back without booting windows up (but I'm sure a lot of others will find this more useful than me). Although, the remote is a nice feature, but it's something that I was willing to sacrifice. My only concern with the v2000 is the silver color showing signs of wear or scratching easily, even though I keep all of my things in immaculate condition. You're right though, for some reason the dv1000 seems to be a lot more popular than the v2000- just not certain why

You may want to hold off on purchasing either of these model for now due to various listed problem on this site. Until HP can come out with a staple fix, getting either the v2000 or the dv1000 is not worth the headaches. Either spend a little more and go with their other thin and light model (as in their business lines) or check out more solid thin and light out there. Good Luck.

I got my dv1000 just the other day, so my impressions are very preliminary. I chose the dv1000 over the v2000 mainly because of the quickplay option and most importantly the built-in dual-headphone jacks. The quickplay isn't as cool as I thought it would be since I was first under the impression it would save on battery life (which I guess technically is does since it doesn't take as long to boot up), but it still keeps the CPU running at 100% (although for the dvd decoding, you need that processor chugging along).

Quickplay CAN play mp3 cd's along with mp3's on your hard-disk, but they must be in a special folder (don't remember which one right now)

I haven't experienced any high pitched buzz, and my CMOS clock was fine (shipped with F.12)

The graphics chipset will be more than adequate for word processing and network monitoring, etc...where you'll see the loss is if you try to play 3D graphics intensive games like Counter Strike, Doom 3, etc (it'll play Solitare and Mahjong just fine :p )...I'm not sure on WC3

I've dual-booted (or is it tri-booted if you count Quickplay? ;) ) with XP-Pro and Fedora Core 3. It didn't pick up the Intel Wireless NIC or the sound card via autodetect, but Intel has released Linux Drivers for the 2200BG wireless NIC. Unfortunately, you have to compile/install/etc for it to work and I haven't spent enough time with it yet to get that part working...and I haven't even touched the sound portion.

the DV1000 has slightly better speakers and dual headphone ports. The remote is so so, if you get bluetooth, you can get your bluetooth phone to do the same, though it also works in quikplay. Also HP has a higher resell value than Compaq for the equivalent models eg on ebay.
