Check the stickies. Though they're written for the Pavilions, they will work with any laptop. You just need different drivers.

Well, since I actually had to do this I should probably post about what I did. As someone already posted, you can follow most of the instructions shown above in the sticky. There is only one KEY difference. Do NOT install the ATI driver package from HP's website using the typical install. Do a CUSTOM install of the ATI driver package. Just install the NET 2.0 and the display driver. If you want, you can install the CCC, but it's not necessary. Installing either of the HD audio will result in losing all sound. Worse yet, you cannot fix this problem without doing ANOTHER clean install. The only problem so far with the 8510p revolves around the display drivers. The drivers supplied by HP are slightly unstable. This results in the screen freezing for a little while, going blank, then going back online. It's not that bad. Doesn't happen that much and when it does it doesn't last long. There also is not a way to update the driver.

You can use the driver CD, just beware of the ATI video install like I mentioned. The driver CD actually comes with a sound driver already. The ATI sound driver is redundant. There were a couple drivers I got off of HP since they were updated. Just install the one's of the disk first. There is NO way to fix the sound if you install both ATI's sound driver and the other one. You MUST do another install as I previously posted.

The graphics card that comes with the 8510p is DDR3.

so is there an option for not downloading the ati sound driver from the cd? or is it even IN the cd? so that i only use whatsin the cd, and dont have to worry about that ati sound driver, and instead use that ati video driver mentioned before

if your hdd is seagate which probably is, then you can use seatool from seagate to wipe out your hdd clean prior installing xp pro.

There's not much to do if you order the Win XP and Driver & Recovery CD from HP. If you didn't get the Driver CD, just go to HP's website and download all the drivers you need. The process isn't hard. Just boot from your CD, delete the present partition, create a new partition, and install XP. After that, install all the drivers you downloaded from HP. The only thing to watch out for is the audio driver issue which I already mentioned. If you need more help, then look at the guide in the sticky. Again, installing XP isn't hard.

    Ok, thanks for the info.

I´m still waiting for the cds, once they arrive. I´ll go ahead.
Which guide in the sticky should I follow?
    - Windows XP reinstall for Intel based DVx5xx series notebooks
    - Windows XP Clean Install guides for older Intel based DVx0xx series notebooks
    - Installing Windows XP on the dvx500t Series

    Thanks

hmm, well you have installed windows xp before ?

once you have your cd, you should integrated the latest servicepack from windows in your cd. Windoes XP SP3 is the latest.

you need to slipstream the sata drivers onto your Win XP installation CD too.

for both you can use nlite. just make a CD image from your Original CD. Open that one with nlite and follow the instructions.

there is a setting for service pack integration and one for including drivers.

i have once uploaded the satadrivers for winxp for another user.
guess this links is still active.

    http://rapidshare.com/files/106576386/Satadriver.rar.html

once you have done all that you can burn your new, fresh and personalized XP Proffesional CD and install from that one.

    Thanks for the sata driver.

I have installed Win xp several times, but never on a laptop.
And I haven´t used any time nlite. But I don´t think that will be a problem.

    Thanks

If you don't install the sound driver thats part of the ATI drivers, won't you not have audio from the HDMI out?

I think I ran into the issue of installing both drivers and not having sound and the way I solved it was to go into Sound Properties and change the default playback & recording device to the SoundMax HD soundcard instead of the ATI Digital Audio Out. Is this the same issue that jin is talking about?

thats not an issue, but more a setting, but yes, that can happen. you will have to pay a little attention to what you are doing, and everything is ok. and btw, this could happen in vista too.

    edit //

i have installed both drivers, and everything is ok.

you should just follow this order during install :
    1. Microsoft UUA
    2. ADI soundmax Sounddriver
    3. Ati Hdmi driver ( best to install with the whole graphicscard package, but after 1&2)

When I installed both I got no sound even after messing around with the sound properties. Then again, they updated the ATI driver so it may be fixed now. Yes, you can still get audio off the HDMI with just the soundmax. I remember turning it off because I didn't want sound off of it. Regardless, I don't like to install unnecessary drivers.

Also, I think the XP disk HP sends out already has the SATA drivers on it. When I installed XP on my 7k200 (when there was nothing on it, fresh out of the packaging), it installed fine without needing to grab SATA drivers.
