Hi I have a compaq cq50-209wm and it has a intel celeron 585 running at 2.16GHz. I'm not a really big fan of this processor it seems really slow, so I was wondering what other processors this computer supports. it has a socket p 478 so it must support some of the mobile core duos, i just want to make sure so that i don't end up spending like $250 on something that doesn't work with my computer thank you.

Download CPUZ from cpuid and tell us what the motherboard tab says will help, but it should almost certainly support a T3400 mobile pentium dual core. It MAY support the T5X50 series such as T5750, T5550 etc. Unless it has better than the GL40 chipset (which being a budget model with the celery its probably GL40) you're limited to 667mhz FSB socket P chips, and there's no garuntee that any of them will work, but HP ussually uses the same BIOS for all models so at least the T3 series will work in most cases. That of course assumes you have an intel chipset, but you probably do.

    Manufacturer: Wistron
    Model: 360B 09.47
    Chipset: Intel GL40 Rev. 07
    Southbridge: Intel 82801IM (ICH9-M)
    LPCIO: NS

Ok that's what the motherboard tab says, sorry it took so long i was at work.

T3400 is about the fastest processor I'd be comfortable trying until someone tries something better. I can't guarantee it will work but it's the most likely to work. Anything above that is a crap shoot unless someone tries it and proves it works.

You could run p8400 if the bios allows it. It will only run at a 667mhz FSB vs a 1066 though so you will suffer a large drop in speed. 8.5 X 266mhz fsb = 2.26ghz. If you were to run it at 667mhz fsb it would be 8.5 X 166mhz FSB = 1.41ghz. The reason its 166mhz and 266mhz is because its quad pumped and they way i understand it is its that number multiplied by 4 is the " rated " fsb. You also could only run the p8400 if the bios allows it which i bet it does.

Try downloading Maintenance and Service Guide for your model, here

The manual says the supported CPU are:

    Code:
    Intel® Core™2 Duo T9600 2.80-GHz processor (6-MB L2 cache)

    Intel Core2 Duo T9400 2.53-GHz processor (6-MB L2 cache)

    Intel Core2 Duo P8600 2.40-GHz processor (3-MB L2 cache)

    Intel Core2 Duo P8400 2.26-GHz processor (3-MB L2 cache)

    Intel Core2 Duo P7350 2.00-GHz processor (3-MB L2 cache)

    Intel Core2 Duo T5900 2.20-GHz processor (2-MB L2 cache)

    Intel Core2 Duo T5800 2.00-GHz processor (2-MB L2 cache)

    Intel Pentium® Dual-Core T3400 2.16-GHz processor (1-MB L2 cache)

    Intel Pentium Dual-Core T3200 2.00-GHz processor (1-MB L2 cache)

    Intel Celeron® 585 2.16-GHz processor (1-MB L2 cache)

    Intel Celeron 575 2.00-GHz processor (1-MB L2 cache)
However, upgrading processor may void your warranty, plus it needs some extra skills to do it.

    Good luck
