The only reason to get the HP over the v2000 is if you like the look of the HP OR if you dont care about the quick play feature of the HP for watching dvd's and cd's.

If you dont care get the compaq

HP can't change the config. Once an order goes in, there is really no changing or stopping it. The bluetooth is part of the modem card, so you really aren't going to be able to get an equivilent one easily afterward. Your only choices now are to either use a USB bluetooth dongle, or send your notebook back when it arrives, and order another one with bluetooth.

Order another one and cancel your previous order. If they will not cancel just return it when you get it in.

Whatever you do, DON'T refuse delivery of the first one.
From what HP Shopping has told me, refusing delivery creates a huge headache in getting your credit card squared away.

Just order another one, it's easy and simple.
HP will pay the return shipping for the first one. They will email you a return FEDEX label.

Well, my DV1000 comes tomorrow, and, if the screen is "dull" as you say, it will be on its way back to HP in a few days, for sure.
I also did not get the Briteview, but I DIDN'T WANT IT, I don't like the glossy screens at all (none of them) but I do require a very nice display, so, hopefully my panel will not be from the same manufacturer as yours. My configuration is "loaded" at about $2,000 with Pentium-M 735, 1 Gig of RAM (2 X 512), 8 X DVD +/- RW burner, 2 small batteries, b/g/bluetooth, remote, 3 years with accidental damage protection.
For the 2K I am paying for a unit that has a base closer to 1K, it will have to be VERY nice for me to hang on to it.

BTW, mine did not spend over an hour in customs, but shipping has been delayed a few days, and HP sent me a $50 coupon.

I have to say that I am quite irritated that they sent me the 3 year accidental damage protection warranty 3 weeks ago separately (and it had to be signed for) and they charged my credit card September 28th for a system that I will receive tomorrow, October 18th!!

I don't think that a "major player" like HP should run your credit card before they ship the system, regardless of what anyone else might think or justify. I don't like that a credit card bill is due before the notebook gets here to me, and I am not buying the CSR's statement that they are "building it just for me" which is total bs.

    We shall see.

hello folks.. i finally got my DV1000 just after 3 days it left shanghai.. thats pretty quick, but i guess delays happen in some cases for HP shipments from shangai.
well, the laptop is pretty much OK, i play more of RTS games, like Rise of Nations, etc.. the comp holds quite well there.. but don't even think abt the big ones like Doom on this.. what i donot like abt the comp is the screen. i did not have a briteview option when i had bought, i had waited for it may be a week and got fed up..the screen looks really bad when compared with other comps. its DULL!!!..
the performance is OK, not too great, not bad.. its good enuf, well it depends basically on the purpose of usage, i do most of my office doc work and surfing and very much less of gaming, so it works quite fine for me..
but if u want a high performance machine don't even think abt this one.
then the shared vedio mem is .. yeah as expected just PASSABLE.. for normal browsing and office work, its quite OK. the key board is quite good.. no flex. tuch pad and the buttons are also ok.. not great and not bad.
what i like most is the size and design of the notebook, its compact and it is very comfortable and ofcourse the quick play, which is coool.
so thats the thing.. i forgot giving my config.. its pretty much the basic, 1.6Gig Pentium M, 512MB 1DIM, 40GB HDD, DVD/CD-RW, blah blah blah.. costed me 1263 before the mail in rebate, got a rebate of 100$. so comes to 1163 US$
i was thinkin of putting in another 512 MB stick, but will i be able to increase the shared vedio's memory from 32MB to higher number as iam gonna put in more memory.. it would be great if you could help me out on this..

to say finally for the price i had put in and my basic necessities, the lappy is pretty much good. you can go for it.

    cheers!!

hmm .. good, i hope youd don't get to return it , as it is basically a good non gaming comp. btw, i did not mention on thing which i don't like , the speakers, the sound is very coarse , flat with negligible bass.. and high volumes it gets worse... i see the brand name JBL H/K on top of the speakers but [?].. could be thats a fault with my piece, as in the reviews that i heared, they said the sound is ok.. but when i compare it with my Office latop a very recent Dell8600 its bad!!!...
also ppl.. do you know how to vary the memory share of a shared vedio card as that of DV1000???.. i'll be gettin my memory upgrade stick soon.. keep me wise.

    cheers

I think that, unless there is a CMOS setting, the sharing is automatic.

Why don't you call the HP 24 hour a day tech support???

What better way to see if you find their tech support useful and decent????

Do that, and then post your experience calling them.

With regards to the shared video memory, you cannot change the amount. The video in the dv1000 is set to reserve a minimum of 32MB of RAM and it will allocate needed memory dynamically up to its maximum of 64MB. So you will see 32MB "reserved" at any given time, evn though the video adapter properties will report a 64MB video card. Regardless, you can't change anything - it's all done automatically.

With regard to the speakers, while the v2000's have been reported to be average at best, I can say that the dv1000's are excellent. Much nicer than my zd7000 or R3000. Good clean sound with crisp highs and decent bass. Excellent for a laptop.

Yes, the DV1000 has better speaker than the V2000 and it has the QuickPlay feature and the option for the remote control.

I was thinking about getting the same notebook but with DVDR and 80GB harddrive
Has anyone tried photoshop or video editing with it and how does it perform in these areas?
