i have a v3019us and it will not log into windows. It goes to login screen, enter password, then it says its loading settings but flashes straight to logging off and goes back to the login screen. it has xp home edition, and does the same thing in safe mode. tried restore disks but pc is telling me restore discs are for wrong model. any thoughts?

Your user account has become corrupted. If you can't get to the account manager though normal or safe modes to create or modify the account, you can try:

    1. During BOOT, press F8 and select "Last Known Good Configuration".

    2. Borrow an OS installation disk that matches your OS. BOOT to the disk and run the “Repair” feature.
( I think this is what datamonger meant)

    3. Remove the drive, backup your data to another computer, and after reinstalling the drive, either run restore via the F11 option or the restore disks, or re-install the OS & drivers. If you do not have an OS installation disk for your OS, borrow one and use the key on the underside of your notebook to register the software.

    4. Use the restore function via the restore partition if you have not deleted it. To do this, press F11 during boot and follow the instuctions.
Warning.... you will lose all of your data if you choose this option. Your notebook will be "restored" to its original delivery state.

If you want to do a system restore, you could try using a friend's copy of Windows XP Home Edition and just use your product key from the bottom of your computer. This copy of XP does not need to be an HP OEM copy at all. Any stand alone copy of XP Home should work. However, I can't guarantee that. I can say from my own experience that even a Dell OEM copy of XP Home will work just as long as it isn't a system specific restore disc. As long as the restore disc isn't system specific, it will most likely work.
