i had just reformat and reinstall windows xp pro. after that i installed all the programs that i need, then i deep freeze it. now i dont need an AV or worry about geting virus or fragmentations anymore. when i want to install a new program, i just have to unfreeze it(thawing). this is like the school computer now LOL but i have control over this. every restart goes back to the way when i freezed it. pretty nice.

no, you can still save things in the hard drive as long as u dont reboot. i save stuff in the hard drive then i transfer it to the flash drive. its not that hard to save. -,- or just thaw it and save then freeze it again. easy and simple.
