I purchased a compaq presairo with win xp home that was loaded with bloatware. I decided to do a clean install of win xp pro when I was upgrading to a 7200 rpm HD.
I did the install and everything runs great. I'm having a problem with one device in "other devices", shows as "unknown device" in device manager.

I tried deleting it in safe mode and it keeps reappearing asking to load software.
I copied all the original files in swsetup and tried going to every folder when asked to load driver. It still would not load any software, so I'm stuck.
Any ideas how to find what the unknown device is?
Update; I ran online hp diagnostics and it said there was a
problem with Parport: device has a problem
and serial: device has a problem.

I did disable sata in bios when installing win xp and enable after install (I followed install guide in this forum).

    Thanks in advance.

Too find out which device it is you will need to pull up the "Unknown Device" in Device Manager, go to details tab and look at the Device ID. Then go to this website to look up manufacturer of device and the id. That should help you find out which driver needs to be loaded. (Drivers of course are available on hp's support site.

Try installing the HP Quicklaunch buttons software. That should resolve(most likely) the issue.

    I had the same problem.

Please search reinstallation guide and you will know the answer.

I installed sp2, quick lunch, the first directory 'something like' IIAA to to make it have sound card and modem supported.
