I have an HP dm4 with the Core i7-640m video chip and the ATi 5450 chip. Do you know how often HP releases new ATi drivers? It's been almost half a year since the last release, and currently the graphics driver keeps crashing on Windows 7, seemingly induced by Windows Live Messenger (weird). Also how do I find out exactly what model my laptop is? With all the numbers and such
-
Might see the actual model on the BIOS and the S/N label on the bottom. If you want to see what's in your computer, download Speccy and find out the specs.
-
I know what's in my computer, I just need to know what exact model I am. Like dm4-11212ca or something
-
I'm assuming you are using the current version of Windows Messenger. I'm guessing here. You switched graphics mode while it's still on, so your list comes up blank or crashes when someone new message you.
-
The symptoms you described are exactly what happened to me! I did not manually switch graphics mode and don't know how. Do you know how to fix this?
And why in the world would WLM trigger a video card switch? I was merely messaging, not video chatting. -
WLM 2011 and a few of their essentials apps are 3d accelerated now (rendered by hardware) unlike their older version were software rendered. At the moment, they don't support the current AMD switchable solution with Intel IGP.
So, you must of at some point in time trigger a switch while the program was active, but never noticed it until you used it.
Unplugging and confirming the prompt is still a manual switch.
That's why we have that recommended disclaimer to close all apps before switching.
Will AMD/HP fix it?? Unlikely for those before the AMD Radeon 6000 series.
Will Microsoft fix it? Very Unlikely, maybe downloading IE9 and disable the 3d acceleration option might affect WLM settings. Never tried.
It's going to be more annoying in the future as more random apps or plugins are going to be hardware rendered by default.
Also, your driver lies in http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...-hp-dm4-dv5-gen-2-g32-cq32-envy-14-intel.html -
I didn't unplug or confirm any prompt. I think my laptop dynamically switches based on load, with no user input.
-
Anyways, HP did post new drivers for quite some time.

That is for an ATi 5650 and I have a 5470. The site for my laptop is Software & Driver Downloads HP Pavilion dm4-1150ca Entertainment Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (Canada - English) but i dunno what the exact model is.

Wait...yours is not the one from your sig??
The driver contains some info about 5470....
Does any one of these match yours?

Sorry I do have the 5470. The file you linked showed that it's for 5650s in the setup ... Also I think i need special ATi drivers since mine comes with an Intel graphics chip on the CPU as well. Like the usual ATi drivers froM AMD's site does not work.
-
Yes, yours do need the special HP drivers to install.
Just try the link I gave you ...even the readme says 5650, but I extracted and read the info file.
If your 5470 matches any one of those device ids I posted, it will install. -
OK just installed and everything works, MSN has yet to crash my video card, but Halo: Combat Evolved multiplayer online does not show messages (who killed who, chats, etc.) anymore ...
