Hiya, Im a student in the UK looking to replace my old laptop and HP pavillion range has caught my eye, however Im unsure whether to go for the dm4 or the dv6.
At the moment I have a Dell inspiron 1721, which was fine for when I was at home but now at uni I really want something more portable.
Obviously the dm4 is thinner/lighter than the dv6 however if I went for it I would be slightly worried about looking at a 14inch screen for hours writing essays and inputting data into excel. Or is 14 inch still perfectly fine for long periods of work?
Other uses of the laptop will be watching a few movies and quite a lot of tv online and also some light gaming such as football manager.
What are people's thoughts?
Thanks

My advice would be not to choose the DV6t, i am returning it bcoz i hate its touchpad. If u go to college, u need to edit assignments in word or other tool which requires a external mouse coz this touchpad is the WORST ever.
Second thing is the size, its way too big. Go with the Dm4t its portable and has a better touchpad than DV6t -
Are the touch pads not basically the same?
-
Go for the smaller laptop. The difference in portability is noticeably important for school use.

but i am concerned about whether the screen will be big enough for using for prolonged period of study.

It all depends on what you are used to, and need it for. As for the "size" I believe that both laptops have the same resolution.
-
Sorry, Im not actually very technically minded, what does the resolution actually mean? and what effect does it have?
-
It means even though the screen is smaller, you see exactly the same thing.
The only reason to go for the DV6 in my opinion (as a former DV6 owner) is for the far superior ATI 5650- if you plan on gaming. I do not know for sure, but I am assuming "Football Manager" is very easy on computers and the 5470 of the DM4 will do just fine (can someone confirm)?
The 14" screen should be plenty for regular use. I would recommend taking a look at some laptops at a big-box store to get a feel for it.
And no, the touchpad on the DM4 is quite a bit better.
The DV6 is a great machine, but in my opinion, based on what you said, the DM4 will be a better fit. You can always buy an external monitor if 14" is too small. -
Ok thanks for that information. Err yeah football manager is a game based around managing a football team, training, transfers etc. not actually playing games.

The HP Dm4 should be more than enough. I'm also a second year at a University and I just recently purchased the DM4. I am extremely satisfied with it in terms of performance, portability, and battery life. It's extremely lightweight for what it is, battery life will last you at least 3-4 hours at minimum, and if you want it to replace your home desktop when you get back to your place, it easily could. The screens aren't as small as the 10 inch netbooks but at the same time they aren't huge which is just perfect for me.

I would definitely go for as small as you feel comfortable using and getting a external monitor for use at your desk. Looking back at college, I could have got the work done in much less time if I could of viewed pages side by side. I would recommend a external monitor with a resolution of 1920 x 1080/1200.
I just bought a dm4 and the find the resolution okay. Its definitely not too small. 1366x768 on a 15.6 makes everything way too big. -
ok fair enough, certainly seams people are siding more with the dm4 than the dv6
dm4 vs dv6 for university
