I just got a new dm4t and so far am very pleased. I do have a question about the fan. It is on continually, but at very slow speed and very quiet. I just want to be sure that it is supposed to be on all the time - many of my past notebooks have been totally quiet and only had their fan come on when needed. I don't want to be using excess power if not required.

I talked to HP support, and for what it's worth, they said it should always be on, usually at very low speed. They couldn't explain why, though, that there is a flag in the Bios that enables or disables "fan always on".

For those with a dm4t, is your fan always on?

Mine was on all the time as well until I changed the setting in the BIOS.

I would not turn the fan off. Heat is not your friend. Unless you like replacing your notebook every few years, I would not do anything to reduce thermal cooling.
