I've got a new DV1000 with a single stick of 512k memory. My brother has a 1Gig stick of notebook memory that he'll give me if it works.

Can I have one 512k stick and one 1 Gig stick in the two slots? Do both slots have to be filled with the same size memory?

Yes... that's what I have. Are both sticks the same speed? If not, the faster of the two will be down clocked to match the slower stick.

Yes, you can. Only in some rare cases does installing different size memory cause problems. I doubt the dv1000 falls in this category.

it's best though if dual channel is supported on motherboard to take advantage of it by using equal sticks.

Dual channel is nice, but it is not a huge leap. The best thing is to get more memory. There is no reason it won't work.

Both sticks don't have to be equal. I have used both 1 stick of 512MB as well as 1 stick of 1GB together. For the dv1000, you don't have to worry about Dual Channel, it simply doesn't support it.

Thanks, DVX.....that's exactly how I'm going to use it, so I'm glad to hear that.

The HP dv1000 does not have dual-channel memory, and also, even if it did, you could still use different sticks.

It is only if you wanted to run in dual channel that you would have to use two matching sticks.
