if you have a very stable power source take it out but to be safe keep it in is your document worth more than the battery is... leaving the battery in will in the long run damage the battery but if you are keeping is for 2-3 years you will need to get a new battery at that time rather than it potential lasting long...

that is a good question how much does the power fail over there... we get 1 power outage a year in Alberta Canada, if we get one at all

The best way to take care of your battery is to use it! Every so often, grab a chair and sit outside and do whatever you need to do. Just use your battery.

Using a lithium-ion battery will help it last longer than not using it.

The most important thing you have to worry about is heat. Heat will kill your battery faster than anything else. Try to keep it cool. But at the same time, don't freak out. Your laptop battery (should) have been designed to withstand the heat generated by the system.

So don't worry too much. Just make sure your system is well ventilated. But like I said, the best way to take care of it is to use it!

So does it mean that if not in use the computer should be shut down and not charging all the time. I thought that in new laptops, once the battery is full the charging will stop so not to over heat and destroy the battery.

Wow, this isnt India,(where blackouts are common, especially in KA). California has enough power to stop blackouts from happening and its not an issue anymore that what it was a couple years ago(although one fire or damaged powerstation could screw us over)

Anyways, keep the battery in the slot, as some have stated already. Batteries are able to withstand heat and just use them normally and they will do fine.

if you use keep it plugged in 99% of the time, why are you worrying about wearing out the battery? so it will give you good battery life for the 1% of the time that you dont plug it in?

Agreed. I usually try and wear down the battery every month or so (quite easy to do when I have it on during my train rides or sitting at cruise-ins).

Besides, when your laptop needs a new battery that's about the time you start to rationalize the need for a new battery or a new laptop :D

Your friend is correct, a Lithium-ion battery has to be used to be kept upto specs. If you are really concerned about it just leave it on battery only overnight with nothing running and let the battery completely discharge. Most batteries have what is called "memory." This means that as time goes on they lose a bit of their capacity. The best way to reduce the memory effect is to completely discharge the battery from time to time.

This is true, but with Lithium-ion batteries, if they are not discharged regularly, about once a month, they will start to lose potential. Even if you only work at your desk, unplug your laptop every so often so you can discharge the battery. And since your not worried about how much battery time you need, just up the brightness of your LCD to what you are used to.

Here is West Texas/Southeast New Mexico, we have about 2 power outages a week, they are rather common.
