I want a laptop with switchable graphics between a discrete card and the basic intel one.

does the hp dm4x or hp envy 14 with the core i7 have switchable graphics?

The newest laptops that have Nvidia graphics have something called "OPTIMUS"...which is automatic switching. It uses Intel graphics unless more power is needed, then seamlessly switches to Nvidia.

I don't know if ATI supports this yet.

They do. New dv6 and dv7's have an optimus equivalent to switchable graphics. Although it's rather new and not as mature, it still gets the job done.
