    Assuming I've understood your question...
double-tap over the item, retain contact with pad and move to destination. Be warned the moment you break contact with the pad you will "drop" the items wherever the mouse-icon happens to be hovering over.

Make sure to take your time to review the amazing Synaptics "Pointing Device" (ClipPad) utility residing on your taskbar and to configure the ClickPad to your liking.

One feature that I couldn't find (so far) is the ability to automatically "hold" the item while dragging until you tap the pad again. This removes the issue of long travels across the panel...

    Oops, just found it.
Mouse Properties / Buttons / "Turn on ClickLock" :p

A couple more things regarding the Synaptics ClickPad.

First off, with Win10, your profile is not automatically loaded. Furthermore (and maybe not an OS-version issue), "mouse properties" are not saved in the profile, but whatever you set it last to is what you get upon login regardless of what profile you try to load. This includes the above "Turn on ClickLock" function, as well as the right-handed / left-handed option.

However, I found another way to set the same function:
    -"ClickPad Settings" tab
    -Tapping
-"Tap and Drag" -> "Locking drags"

This route has the advantage that it only applies to the trackpad and not to "other pointing devices".

Although skilled trackpad users have mastered the "continuous drag" with their pads, I'm an oldskool mouse user and I need the ability to lock my trackpad-drags... but I don't like locking external-mouse drags... ! So this alternate option is perfect for my needs. :)
