Hey, I haven't bought a laptop before but my mother is going to be giving me 1k for a combined christmas and birthday present (they're pretty close together for me so it's logical). I was looking at the dv4000 as it has the features I want, fast processor and a x700. One question though; How well does the case wear on hp's? I mean my friend is getting the lenovo z60t with the titaniam LCD cover and the lenovo's are known for being "tough as nails" I'm wondering if the hp's scratch/dent alot and I can't get any specs from HP, very tight-lipped about what they actually use. Oh yeah, and if you want to see the ultimate accessory check this out: http://matias.ca/laptoparmor/index.php.

If you are refering to the v4000, the case is plastic. The x700, if you want to game, is better than anything ThinkPads offer, but the ThinkPad will be better built. Maybe something like the Asus Z70va would be a good fit.

Now they aren't the toughest notebooks around but they aren't shoddily built either. I'd say their case durability is about average.

The Problem with the Asus Z70va is finding it, that and I don't have enough money to get a model of it that's decent even if I wanted to. How about the paint job? I've heard that on some notebooks the paint burns through because of the heat caused by the components. shouldn't be a problem with the pentium M? Nor with the Ati mobility cards. I guess what I want to say is, How much has your HP case been scratched and dented in the years that you've had it? I've heard stories of the entire optical bay (not just the drive) falling out of an HP.

EDIT and I'm talking about the dv4000 (the pavillion not the compaq)

I'm still (occasionally) using my old HP omnibook 4150. It's about 8 years old and the case is like new. Now that I look at it closely, I'm quite amazed; I never used a notebook bag or case, and I did throw and carry it around quite a bit! I'm not the kind of guy that worries about scratches: just makes them less attractive for thieves )

Also, I never experienced ANY trouble related to build-quality, except for the CD-ROM bay not making good contact once in a while. This is a known issue and it has probably been solved now.

I hope this helps. On the one hand, it's 8 years of experience. On the other hand, HP build quality can offcourse have gone downhill in 8 years.
