is this normal
-
Yes, it is very normal for a hard drive to get hot.
-
Yes it is . -
how hot is hot though? try measuring it with Everest Home Edition (NHC has some issues with recently released notebooks, Core 2, and SATA hard drives).
-
Yeah, it get's pretty warm. I have the 12 cell battery which puts some air under the bottom of the machine, so it's not nearly as bad as if it laid flat. I'm thinking that a 7200 rpm drive would be a tad more toasty too.

How hot is hot, and what are the air temps... -
Yes, the drive might be warm to the touch...depending on the materials around the drive (vents, plastic, metal, more hot parts, etc). But 7200 v 5400 really isn't that big of a factor; I'm reporting hard drive temps that are about the same as other 5400 users (and I'm 7200). Yes, it spins faster, but doesn't have to spin as long to get the same work done. It might be 2-3C hotter if you access a large file, or do a lot of drive work, consistently for a long period of time.
dv 2000t hard drive hot =,-
