i'm looking for a good, cheap laptop mainly for programming and web browsing. I love the sleek looks of the dv1000 but I know it's been around for a while and I'm wondering if there might be an update or a price drop coming soon.

Also, is the dv1000 too much for what I need? I know I'll probably never watch DVD's on the thing so maybe I should be looking somewhere else but I don't see any other HP notebook for that price in the same small package.

There is only a little price difference between these two models. I have been pricing them for the past week (during which tim e there has been a price increase). Depending on how you configure them it's going to be $75 - $99 less for the Compaq.

    Also, if you're a member at Costco, they currently have a nicely configured dv1000 (dv1156cl) for $1149 after a $150 discount: http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?prodid=11032770&ec=BC-EC877-CatHome&pos=2

    sidepocket,

Since you do not watch DVD and if you are not a hardcore gamer, I would recomend you go for Compaq v2000, which is a twin of dv1000.

Its silver, sleek and lightweight like the Apple powerbook, but at very much less price.

If you are a student, you can configure and get it for around a grand on www.hpshopping.com after student discounts.

I have the same one and Iam very happy with it.

thanks for the tip. i'll definitely look into the v2000. It's too bad the one at Costco only comes with XP Home Edition. It seems like all the notebooks you find at retail places only come with Home pre-installed. I'm a .NET programmer and for that reason I need Professional Edition.

I would have to disagree with you lapboy, both laptops don't have a very big price difference.

I can tell you sidepocket that both the DV1000 and the V2000 will be very good choices for your needs and are quite portable.

Go and configure one at hpshopping.com so you can get XP Pro.

i was also looking at HP's business laptops. I really like how they're priced decently and they come with XP pro by default. But none of them are configurable at all it seems.

I ordered the DV1000. I am also mainly going to be using it to program and watch DVDs if I get tired of programming :)

I got a 60gb hard drive with XP Home, cause it is cheaper (would have liked a blank hard drive/no OS option, but all of the larger companies do not offer that option because of the claws of Microsoft). When I get it, I am going to wipe XP home, save the little Linux partition that lets you use it as a standalone DVD player. Install XP Pro on a 25gb partition and the Ubuntu distro of Linux on the other 35. The only reason to still use Windows IMO is Visual Studio .NET, they did something right there, and to play games; but that is what my nice shiny desktop is for :)

I got the 12 cell battery because if you are just programming and what not it will last you 8 hours! I like that at the cost of weight, I just hate wires attatched to my notebook while I am using it.

Yes, the 12 cell battery give you around 6-8 hours of battery life and lifts up your laptop a bit, giving it better airflow and I think its a bit easier to type on.

Like I said sidepocket, go configure a DV1000 or V2000 on hpshopping.com and get XP Pro.

I bought two different Pavilion DV1000's and returned them both. Neither one would hold 54Mbps on a LAN. I tried different lan's and had other notebooks sitting along side, they all worked fine, and stayed at 54Mbps, while the DV1000's slowly sank down to 1-2Mbps and stayed there. Tried installing the latest updates from HP, didn't do any good. Gave up and returned them. too bad, nice machine otherwise.

Just get it through the www.hpshopping.com website and use the Academic Purchase Program. You can also buy an IPAQ PDA, Printer and Scanner to boot.
