Hi, just bought the dv1000 and now the Bluetooth module is acting up. It is NOT part of the MiniPCI card (that's exclusively Intel 2200WBG).

What happens is that usually, the BT module gets recognized as an "Unknown Device" under USB. Sometimes I can force it by uninstalling the unknown device, restarting the computer.

Then it gets recognized properly as a Bluetooth by HP. It does, however, disappear sporadically while Windows is running fine otherwise...

I have upgraded to BT by hp rev 3.00E, which has also upgraded my firmware, the issue remains.

Anybody have similar experience or mayb a fix? I am in China where this model is so new that they might ened 2 weeks to repair the notebook if the BT module is a chip on the mainboard...[ :(]

It sounds like a bad BT card if Windows is having a problem recognizing it as a known device. That information is saved in the firmware and should be accessible to Windows. The fact that it's not (and comes and goes intermittently) leads me to suspect a hardware problem.

Thanks, that's what I am thinking after the worthless tech support said it was a SP2 problem.

I uninstalled SP and it still happened. Problem is, I can't see where they would fit a BT card, I am afraid this is integrated into the mainboard.

It could also be a problem with the USB hub it is attached to internally.

The Intel Wifi/BT is a Mini PC Card, that can be accessed from removing the Memory Card Cover and than removing the MiniPCI Slot Cover.

Sorry, but read the first line of my original post:

"Hi, just bought the dv1000 and now the Bluetooth module is acting up. It is NOT part of the MiniPCI card (that's exclusively Intel 2200WBG)."

How do I know that? I removed the MiniPCI card and still had the same problem of the system trying to recognize an "Unknown Device" under USB.

BTW, there is no MiniPCI WiFi/BT combo card on the market...yet.

Thanks for your help and interest anyway.

Thanks! I will take out the card again and check whether the USB failure happens still. My SD card reader works fine, though.

I looked at the HP spare parts website and it indeed lists the Intel 2200BG w/ Bluetooth - not available for order though.

Intel website does not mention their card to have BT, but that may be a special OEM job for HP.

Will let you know if something happens...

Hi! I got exactly the same problem as you! after installing the 3.00E upgrade to get BT1.2 and some new profiles.

The BT device is not found and a balloon with "USB Device Not Recognized" is poping up all the time. If i uninstall the "Bluetooth by HP" and reboots a couple of times Windows finds new hardware "bluetooth by HP" installs ONLY the driver automatic, and not the config/controllpanel stuff. After this the balloon is gone, but now access to BT. There is a BT device in the Device Manager.

Have you got any clue´s how to fix this?

Nope, I have no clue how to fix this. It is intermittent and I am pretty much convinved it is a hardware failure that I am experiencing. I am reluctant to hand over my laptop for this as I still have a BT CF card which poses no problems under SP2 whatsoever.

HP support is as usual clueless, I will wait until the dismal mechanical quality of this laptop has caused enough deterioration I can get more things fixed all at once (touchpad tecture wearing off, pad-printed icons disappearing, LCD frame leaving marks on the bottom shell).

My only workaround is to reboot and remove the Unknown Device until it gets recognized. I went a whole day including 2 hibernations with an working Bluetooth until it crapped out again - yippee!

Let me know if you have better luck with tech support, they have been worthless so far for me.

You need to go into 'start' menu then software set-up. un-check the two boxes that are checked and check the other one where you'll find the bluetooth device. Initialize the set-up and you should be grand.

Hi! I am not quite sure what you mean by unchecking 2 boxes? Which ones are you referring to? When I got the laptop, the Bluetooth software was unchecked in the software setup application (wonder why?)so I checked it and installed it.

I have taken the laptop to the local repair center and they have tried to do a fresh install of Win XP SP2 but also had trouble. They have now ordered a new mainboard and a wireless card to see if that fixes the problem. The factory where these laptops are being built is only 2 hours away...maybe I should go to Quanta myself :)

I am hoping they also replace my "bald" touchpad which lost its texture in less than a month....

I will let you know the results...

    Thanks for your interest!

    Oh, almost forgot:

I finaly did the unthinkable and looked on the underside of the WiFi plastic cover (duh!!) since I usually place it outside-up on the table for the screw not to fall out.

On there is a sticker which clearly describes which Bluetooth module is being used. Mine has an Actiontec BTM200 (also available as a dongle). I am not sure where it is located as I wrote before. When I remove the WiFi care, the "Unknown Device" message continues to appear whith no other system device ahving problems...

I have to assume it is noy on the MiniPCI card, I peeled bacl the stickers to take a look at what's underneath and its all Intel chips with bo BT marker on them...on both sides of the MiniPCI board.

Anyway, other covers also have stickers on their underside...

It's probably the same internal USB Bluetooth module that my zv5000z has. Mine is located under the keyboard and has an antenna wire connected to it. As to how to fix your problem... dunno.

I am having the same problem with my dv1000. Unknown device uder usb keeps popping up after I did the upgrade bluetooth software from the hp website. I re-installed windows but before installing the drivers I still got the pop-up unknown device. I will be sending the unit back to hp as they could not solve the problem over the phone. Does anybody know how to correct this problem?

Sounds like I am not alone anymore...sorry for your trouble.

My advice: Send it back, the repair center here confirmed the BT module is on the mainboard and they are sending a new mainboard for exchange. I have procrastinated for too long and have lost too much sleep over this...

In my case, it was an intermittent problem which increased in frequency, no matter which software/firmware I installed. I usually charge my iPaq and my cell phone though USB, maybe that killed the USB hub and causes problems...anyway, should have the unit back this week...

    Some update:

The local repair center has finally confirmed that the BT module is NOT in the WiFi Intel 2200WBG MiniPCI card but rather is a daughter board located under the keyboard.

Regretfully, HP is quite disorganized and they can not even find the spare part in their system. Some company...ironically, the factory who built the damn thing is 2 hours away from here...maybe I will give them a call and collect the spare part myself.

Actiontec BTM200 seems to be an external dongle, maybe the company makes an OEM version is external antenna connection.

On the other hand, it may still be a mainboard problem with the USD Root hub or controller...
