Hello. I just got my newly configured dv1000 a week ago and today, it keeps crashing. No blue screen or anything; I'll be in the middle of surfing and everything goes blank. I hit the power key and it has to boot up all over again and it took me 5 tries to even get it to boot at all. It did this a few times yesterday but I didn't think anything of it. I read the manual and it says this may be due to overheating but I don't have time to wait for the laptop to cool down if I'm using it at school. I'm just wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same problems? I can't even run a virus scan because it will crash in the middle of it. I didn't get any warranty or service plan, even though the sales guy was really pushy on the phone. Maybe this is HP's way of getting back at me for refusing to buy their service plans.

If you can, I would try downloading the latest BIOS from HP's support website, and flash your BIOS.

Do you have any external devices plugged into the notebook?

As far as I know, there is no way to *NOT* get a 1 year limited warrenty on any HP Laptop. :hp: So you're covered, and can send it back. This covers hardware failures, but not accidental damage. Call them up and talk to them. Let me know how it works out... I'm thinking about getting an HP laptop, and want to know how good their Tech support is lol.. So keep us updated...

The service plans are for extentions beyond the first year, and also for accidental damage coverage (kinda like insurance, but doesn't cover theft).

Don't you have a 30 day return policy?

I've been using it for the past 2 hours or so without any problems but I've noticed that the fan has been kicking in quite often, right from when I turned it on. My laptop seems to run at around 55 degrees and the fan turns on when it hits 60. I have the 12 cell battery so the back is always propped up, but just to be safe I have the front propped up on a thin notebook right now. The HP salesman told me I had 21 days to return it in case anything went wrong but I'm not sure what kind of support I have beyond that. 1 year warranty would be great because I really love this laptop. The L2000 I got back in August has a really loud, distracting fan and after a few months of use the keyboard is already having issues with certain keys not typing unless I really press down hard. The battery life of the 12 cell is really great so I'd like to keep this one as long as it doesn't keep shutting down.

The BIOS I downloaded from the HP site isn't compatible with my notebook. I don't know why, because it was under the software/driver downloads for the dv1000. Oh well.

I would suggest contacting HP, for any reason it should not shutdown abruptly like that. May be potentially hardware issue( Now and then it happens with every brand). Instead of keeping that doubt, better get replacement or return this one and get another one.

Thanks for the advice. I think I have a bum fan because usually it kicks in at 60 degrees but right now it's been running around 77-80 and the fan hasn't been coming on. I propped the front of my computer up onto a thin notebook and the temp has dropped to 70 after a few minutes. I touched the bottom of the laptop and it's really hot, no wonder it was shutting down like that a few days ago.
