Did you uninstalled the driver? there should be a copy of all drivers on the hard drive, try to reinstall it from there.

would be good to know what Os you are using. is it a fresh install, or did the sound stop working all of a sudden ?

would be great if you could give some more info on your system. we might be able to help you better then.

    okay. that is a start.

whats in the hardware manager ? can you see the audio device there ? if it is not showing up there, there are three options :
    1. the driver is not installed
    2. the device has somehow been disabled in bios
    3. the chip is broken.

does your notebook have a hd audio chip ? i guess so.
did you install the microsoft uaa driver ?

this driver needs to be installed before installing the audio drivers. it will make win XP ready for hd audio. only after having the microsoft uaa driver installed you can install your audio drivers !

go to add hardware and try to install it again, it should be able to find the driver file if its there on the hard drive.
