Does anyone have any comments on the performance, durability, and support of HP's dv1000 series?
-
You might search around a bit, but most people are really happy with the dv1000. I'm not sure there's a better value for this price point, especially for a PM.
-
I've seen it in compusa. Seems like a good notebook.
Some folks have complained about bottom of dv1000
getting hot. The top (keyboard, touchpad) area was
cool during my 5 minute test.

I've had several Compaq desktops and laptops before, with little issue. When I did have problems, tech support seemed pretty good. Is this still the case with HP? (I'm also considering the 3 Year Express Service upgrade)

I really like this notebook, really nice, haven't found any fault with it except for the integrated graphics. It would be almost perfect with a dedicated GPU. I highly recommend it.

Yes the integrated graphics is a downfall for any hardcore gamer, but if you're a moderate one or only into something like Roller Coaster Tycoon or Solitaire, then it's not a problem. I have a DV1000 (1.7 Centrino), it's an awesome system, but yes the bottom gets extremely hot, and I'm not into the screen very much either. But other than that, it's an awesomely fast computer.

I would say both. I'm not into the Glossy screen myself, but it doesnt have an even flow of brightness/contrast which makes movie viewing a sickening experience. Well first off when you watch a movie with letterbox bars on top and bottom. The top is extremely dark, the middle is a very tight "sweet spot", and the bottom bar is a very light gray. Imagine watching a scifi movie....? Also the viewing angles are horrible. I notice the front has 2 headphone ports to watch movies, but unless you & your friend has their heads taped together, you can't see the so called "sweet spot" (which is tiny to begin with). That's why this is now my little sister's computer. I also notice this light leakage and tight viewing angles common in many 14" Glossy WXGA's.

When you said Glossy.. did you mean with BrightView or without?
I was originally going to go for a L2000, but after reading that the heat problems on it, I decided to go for a cooler, faster PM. What is the source of the heat on the dv1000 (HD)?
One more question: are there two RAM slots on the back, and what RAM does it use?
Thanks -
The DV1000 uses xbrite, which is just about the same as all the others, they just have different names for it. Glossy, colorshine, etc. I'd just call it bathroom mirror. Yes the heat is from the Hard Drive and I believe the ram that was installed was a PC2700. Both slots (both on the back) were filled so I had to pop one off to install another.

How is the 900GMA? How much shared memory does it use?
HP only reports the FSB being 400 MHz, so if you buy a 533 MHz P-M (forgot whether that's Banias or Dothan or whatever), wouldn't it be a waste? -
I've L2000 and it's true that it gets quite warm in the left side.
Battery life sucks too (2 hours).
For possible replacements, I've considered dv1000 or v2000, both with
PM. dv1000 seems to get warm at the bottom BUT not at the top
(keyboard, touchpad) area. That's just with 10 minutes of playing
beethoven's symphony in repeat mode at compUSA. I had it muted
v2000 is the same form factor as L2000. However, it runs cooler.
I'm still not sure whether to go for v2000...

Hi,
Under moderate usage (net surfing, MS word etc), does the fan
come on often on dv1000? The reason why I'm returning L2000 is
the heat/fan issue. It bothers me a lot more than other folks.
dv1000 seems to get warm at the bottom near harddisk area...
but that can be fixed with hitachi or seagate harddisk.

The GMA900 uses up to 128 megs of the system ram.
dv1000- Winner?
