Hello:
I've just purchased a dv1635ca.
According to toms hardware review, the dv1000t was a "fairly cool" machine, with the case around 30.0° C. However, my laptop runs quite warm. The case at the bottom around the hard drive runs at 38.2° C, when the system is idle. The room temperature is around 24 to 25° C.
Do you think there's something wrong with my machine, or am i missing something (about the machine or the review)? What's your temperature experience with your dv1000t?
Thanks for your helps.

Not sure if I can help, but I have a custom configured dv1000t. It gets slightly warm around the left side of the mousepad, but nothing I would call hot, at all.
The bottom of the laptop, when I put it away after using it for several hours, is also warm, but again, nobody would discribe it as "hot"...
I don't have software to let me know what the actual temperature of my case is.
Hope this helps in some way.
bottom line, my dv1000t runs very cool to warm, and is amazingly quiet! -
My dv1000t does get kinda warm on the bottom left side, usually when I'm doing a few different things at once (watching streaming video, surfing the net, etc). Do you know if that's where the CPU or RAM is?

If it is the left side below the card bus slot, then that location should be where the hard drive is.
On my machine, the device manager reports the hard drive to be ST9100824AS. Is it the same as you? In a silent room, I can clearly hear the low-volume hum of the hard drive, and I can sense a vibration on the top above the hard drive area too.
I'm mostly interested in knowing whether my laptop is defective, when I still have a chance to exchange the unit if it's a lemon. Any more comments would be appreciated!!
EDIT: Just found out that the laptop is not as quiet as my sis's Packard Bell EasyNote laptop, which is pretty much dead silent... :O -
I am currently using my 3rd dv1635ca after the first two had problems with the loud keyboard.
my first two 1635 used the same hd as yours and the third one is using HTS541010G9SA00 (hitachi travel star vs seagate for the first two). I can say that after using 3 laptops with 2 different harddrive, your laptop is normal as i encountered the same thing in those 3 i.e. slightly warm and a bit humming noise from the hard drive.
I was reading the review for another hitachi 2.5" hard drive ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822146052)
and it said that the noise can be reduced by using ftool and turning off the indexing service.
Hope this helps. -
my dv1000t runs pretty hot.. and very loud... (i also have Hitachi Hard drive). I've sent my laptop back to HP 3 times already within 40days. I'm very dissapointed with my HP.

My hard drive is really silent. It's the 100gb, but I haven't looked at the model # yet.

Some Updates:
I've exchanged my laptop, and the hard drive is just as warm as the last one, so I guess maybe it's not the hard drive.
However, I noticed that the hard drive gives a slight "dting" sound sporadically when the the system is not running anything, and when the system shutting down and the hard drive turns off. I guess it is the sound of the pin returning to the lock position.
To give you an idea of how loud it is, the "dting" was as loud as the default windows OS button click sound (eg. the sound you get when clicking the "back" button in the internet explorer) when the system volume setting is set to the the levels shown in the attached jpg.
Do you guys think it is normal? If so, I'll probably stick with this laptop instead of returning/exchanging it again...
Again, thanks for your helps!Attached Files:
