I have a dv1000t HP Pavilion with XP home edition.
I have been trying to download Windows compatibility pak so Office 2003 can read office 2007 documents.
I had no problems download it on my z70va ASUS. It downloaded in just a few minutes.
But on the HP -- the download is taking over an hour.![]()
When this first happened, I though there was some malware on it. I run AVG Internet security all the time. But just to be on the safe side I downloaded Spybot Search and Destroy and checked with that -- nothing (though I did have it delete all my temporary files, Super AntiSPyware, nothing, Malwarebytes AntiMalware -- it found one registry infection Hijack.start. From what I read elsewhere that's a false positive but I deleted it anyway.
I also installed SP3 on the HP a few days before all this.
I am not sure if that is the problem.
My internet is a high speed DSL and both the HP and the ASUS are on it. SO I don't think that is the explanation.
Does anyone have a clue as to what might be the cause?
It seems a little bit like even IE is loading slightly slow -- but I am not sure if that is my imagination.

Are you using wireless or ethernet?

Hmm better test the speeds.
Go to www.speedtest.net and benchmark both notebooks to make sure its not the Microsoft server at fault. -
The speedtest said it was downloading at 986 KB but the download from MS was at 6.71 KB (<-- that is not a typo error.) It was 27.5 MB file so you can imagine how painfully slow. But I had tried it on my ASUS just a little while before with no problem.
But there is one difference.... I switch back and forth between a modem in one place in my apartment and a modem in another place (the building thwarts wireless at more than about 10 feet.)
The modem in one place is a newer and higher quality modem and that is where i tested the ASUS. The HP is always connected to the older modem. (Yes, I turn off one modem completely before I turn on the other and vice versa. I move my ASUS around the apartment. The HP stays put.)
So maybe it is the older modem -- or maybe the phone line isn't as good. in this part of the apartment. the phone lines here are as old as dirt and builder installed 45 years ago..
But I never noticed a problem downloading at the older modem before nor on the HP.
Anyway, the file finished downloading and installed properly. There is a service Pak 1 to install that is pretty hefty. I will try to download it tomorrow with the new modem and see if that makes a difference. -
I am wondering. Just before all this and before I upgraded to XP SP3, HP downloaded a whole bunch of new updates. Could that be the cause of this snail's pace download.
That is the only think I can think of that changed *before* this problem happened.
dv1000t HP Pavilion down loads sooo slow!
