Ever since i got the dv1000t, Hp has an automatic update pop-up when there are new updates to download. Every time I click on "balloon" to download -- first it lists all the downloads and then there is the install button, which I click. The little icons show it downloading and after going on for a while the window then indicates that that update download failed and goes onto the next one. And then that one fails.. and so on for th the whole list. A lot of them are to fix security breaches.

The first time this happened, very shortly after I received it, I called HP tech support. They tried several ways to get it to download, all of which failed, then they assured me that the reason it failed was that I had everything I needed. I didn't believe it but I accepted it.

A year later, the downloads still fail and it seems to me that the list of "available" updates is getting somewhat longer -- suggesting that new update are being added. The top ones are all security risk related.

I had no AV software for about six months, I disable the free trial of Norton (and eventually uninstalled it.) I have given up on HP tech support with regard to this matter. (They have been extremely helpful for everything else.)

Can anyone clue me in as to what is going on?

Try manually installing the updates by visiting the product support page for your notebook and downloading the lastest drivers for your laptop. For windows updates you can also try downloading the updates via their website, http://update.microsoft.com/
    good luck

I had exactly the same problem when I recently installed my officejet on my home network. Identified a few updates including critical ones but after download, reports download failed.

I read some of the HP troubleshooting help and noticed that there is a requirement for Windows Explorer version 6 and above for HP Update to work properly. I have always been using Mozilla Firefox as my default browser. Having got no replies from HP on the problem yet, I tried this out anyway and it worked!

First, I set Windows Explorer to default browser. After that, I reinstalled the HP software again. The HP Update seems to work fine after that. You can try it out.
