A scoundrel of a thief broke into my apartment and stole my laptop. I was gonna get a new laptop for school anyways but this has forced me to make my decision sooner. At first I was all set to get a v2000z: 2.0 ghz Turion, 12 cell battery, with all the good options. But now since I'm lobbying Financial aid to give me some money I'm considering a dv1000t, 1.83 ghz core duo. I can either buy it through hp with the app discount or costco with a 100 dollar customer appreciation coupon, I will buy from wherever is cheaper. Which would you pick?

Here is what I'm looking at

    V2000z
    2.0 ghz Turion ML-37
    brightview
    Ati radeon w/ productivity ports
256 ram ( will upgrade later)
    80 gb hd
    dvd rw/cd rw
    broadcom wlan w/ bluetooth
    12 cell battery

    vs

    dv1000t
    1.83 ghz pentium core duo
    brightview
    integrated graphics 950 w/ webcam
    256 ram (will upgrade later)
    80 gb hd
    dvd rw/cdrw
    broadcom wlan w/ bluetooth
    6 cell battery

I want this laptop to be a truly mobile computing experience, I have bluetooth on my cell phone so so I can connect to the web that way, plus the campus has wireless access. I will be surfing the internet, writing papers, using excel, messing with quark and photoshop from time to time, managing mp3s, watching videos, chatting, and maybe if I have time some games (doubtful as I am not much of a computer gamer). The v2000z is cheaper, is 64 bit, and sufficient for my needs. The dv1000t can multitask better, looks better, has an integrated webcam, and has the latest technology.

Help me make a decision please!

I have a CPQ V2000 series Turion-32 and my wife has an older HP DV1000 series.

I do feel that the AMD Turion64 tied to the ATI integrated graphics will be possibly a better platform for Windows Vista, and it is cheaper. For an integrated video, I like the performance.

The new HP with the Dual Core CPU, the built-in webcam, and the ExpressCard card (vs. CardBus) slot could offer more forward power and compatability too. Also, the HP offers the QuickPlay, which is much faster if you just want to watch a DVD with the system.

I bought the Compaq in Jan. as it was the better "bang for the buck" then.
I would probably still buy the Compaq, but the ExpressCard could be the "deal breaker", as I do want to add and a HDTV tuner card in the future, and ExpressCard appears to have better bandwith for that application.

Are there any ExpressCard HDTV tuners? There have been USB HDTV tuners for quite some time now (I have one) but I haven't seen any ExpressCard.

If you're going to run Vista you'll want to go straight to 64-bit (there will be one 32-bit legacy version, the remaining editions will be 64-bit, last I checked).

You'll want a 12-cell battery regardless. The Turion should give you better battery life than the Core Duo.

The Radeon 200M is about twice as fast as the Intel 950 and I trust ATI's drivers more than Intel's. Neither is particularly good at games but gaming is plausible on the 200M.

Too bad the Turion X2's aren't out for another month (at least).

I'd go for the V2000Z out of those two, but I'm partial to both compaqs and AMD over hp and intel respectively.
