A friend of mine brought her dv1040us notebook over yesterday for me to take a look at. She bought it in Jan. 2005 at Circuit City with an extended warranty.
A couple of weeks ago, it shut down while she was using it and then she couldn't get it to turn back on. After taking it to Circuit City, they sent it off to get it fixed under the extended warranty. She recieved it back a few days ago. Circuit City has denied the warranty claim. They stated "Service Denied - Shipping Unrepaired, Liquid Spill" on the Laptop Repair Worksheet.
I have examined the laptop myself and can't find any evidence of any liquid spill anywhere, even under the keyboard. It doen't even look like it has ever been taken apart. There are two tamper seals on the bottom and they are still intact. Personally, I think Circuit City lied to keep from having to make repairs or replacing the notebook, but that is another story...
We tried swapping out the memory. The power supply works. The blue charging light on the front panel flashes three times when you hit the power button. Other than that, it doesn't do anything.
Is there anything else I could check out to figure out why it doesn't turn on?
Thanks!

Disconnect it from power, remove the battery and let it sit for a few minutes. Then install the battery, connect to power, and try to turn it on again.

try turning it on for many times... i had a notebook once that finally started after about 10 attempts

Tried removing the battery, letting it sit over night. Tried pushing the power button many times too. Still no go...
I guess I'll take it apart and see if there is anything obvious on the inside. -
i would call circuit city and complain like crazy. they were probably being lazy. kinda like how amazon rejects all the people who turn in their phone rebates, but will give it to you if you call and b****.

If she paid with a credit card, that may offer some recourse.

Hi Winter War,
I had a problem with CC also. They were offering a $50 rebate. I put mine in after buying it one of two states which they were offering it in and I laso live in that state they sent me a letter stating that I had an invalid state code on my rebate form. Before that I had been pricing a Hitachi tv and they said they would only price match if I went to the other store and got a written receipt with that price. I told the jerk that I would go and get that receipt, it will be the one they give me when I buy it from them, which I did.
Moral of the story is even thogu I really like my DV 5030, I will not buy anything else from Circuit City.
I would do as was suggested and make a scene. -
I had a similar problem (blue charging light on the front panel flashes three times when you hit the power button), and then found that my power cord was frayed in one area. If I tweak it just right, the power LED turns on, and I'm able to boot up as normal. Definitely time to replace my power cord...
dv1040us doesn't power up...
