    Hello every,

The LCD on my DV2000 broke last month and since I dont have the money to replaced right away I decided to use it with my 17" lcd monitor for the mean time. After a few days of using it with the external monitor one day I turn it on and got nothing on my external monitor. Since then I having trying to figure out why I am not getting video signal through my VGA or s video.

Now I am afraid there is something worst than just the broken lcd so I am trying to see if there any way I can test it or find out if it still works before I get the replacement LCD. I at least know the there is signal going to the broken lcd since when it turns on the screens light up and turns white.

Is it possible to use a different size lcd from another hp? I have 15.4 lcd from my sister's old compaq will the dv2000 mother board run a bigger screen or will it kill the motherboard?

That will suck if the gpu is actually dead after I the new lcd..I guess If I end up buying a replacement LCD I need to make sure that I am able to return it and get a full refund.

I will take a look at the link but at this point dealing with HP might not be worth it since I will have to first replace the lcd and see if its actually dead so I can talk to hp.

Thanks for the link..I also just found out from the other link that my laptop is included in the list with the defective gpu. So I will get the new lcd first and them give it a try to see if hp will fix it in the case the gpu is dead.

Your notebook is very likely past the end of the HP enhanced warranty program (2 years since purchase). I'd scrap your current notebook for parts and put the money towards a new machine with ATI graphics. You could try to reflow the motherboard on your own so you can go back to using your external LCD... if you have the time that's probably worth a shot.

Yeah I also thought about not fixing the laptop now that its not even working with the external monitor. But I since at the moment I cant afford a new one I wanted to try all the options to see if it still works, because the replacement screen will only cost me $90.

Well I guess I still can get some money out of the parts that I have..I will try the oven to see if it have any effects.

Also is there a way to tell visually if there gpu is damage or the defects in the solder?

Can I use a 15.4 LCD from compaq to test the video card? or it wont work?

Visual inspection won't tell you anything. But getting the chip back up and running isn't too hard. Getting it to stay up and running, well... using the copper penny trick helps a lot. I'm 99% certain that the GPU is the problem.

No idea on the 15.4 LCD.

oh ok I will give it a try..them I will take the computer apart and put it in the oven tomorrow.. If it doesnt work I will just sell the parts like I am planning right now.. I just estimated that I could get at least $150 after selling most of the parts (Memory, CPU, DVD/CD, wireless card, hdd, keyboard, etc.)

btw what the penny trick I think I havent heard of that one before?

Thanks for all the help and suggestions brianstretch.. I tried the oven method and after getting no results I decided to just sell the parts since its not worth fixing when laptops are so cheap right now. I already liste most of the parts on Ebay so know I just need to get them sold and save some money to get a new one.
