My HP dv2000 laptop has those volume control buttons on the top-right of the keyboard. Was wondering how to disable the window that pops up whenever you press those buttons.
    Interrupts gaming, etc.

What OS are you using XP or Vista? f you have XP MCE then disable the 'ehtray' process/service to remove the volume popup. If you are using XP Home/Pro/Vista then try uninstalling the Quick launch buttons software or install one of the older versions.

What do you mean older version of quicklaunch? I have a dv2500t and would love to disable DVD etc buttons but I do like volume, mute, and the remote control. Is it possible to disable some but not all?

Try uninstalling the HP quicklaunch buttons software. That should disable the quickplay/DVD/pause buttons while the volume controls and mute function should still be active.

The older versions of the software allowed users to customize the button actions(like opening another application instead of quickplay). but HP removed this from the newer versions and the older versions do not work in Vista not any of the newer hardware.

Yes, I know what you are talking about now. I did the clean install and I rememeber before I installed quicklaunch my volume would work but my remote didn't. So that is what inspired me to install the quick launch software. Is there any way to get the remote to work without the quicklaunch? Every time my hand brushes agianst the buttons, I start something. It drives me nuts.

I usually just remove QLB.exe or something like that from startup or end the process on the task manager and the DVD/Quickplay buttons on both keyboard and remote will disable launching the programs

The poping sound can only be disabled in the BIOS. Check the BIOS.

I actually had this problem and ended up finding a different solution for an hp dv9700t (vista 64 bit), but should work with all hp vista's with quicktouch
1.) Go to start, type "run" without quotes, hit enter
    2.) type "msconfig" hit enter
    3.)Click startup tab
4.) Uncheck the "HP quicktouch on screen display"
