HP has decided to replace my zd7000 which went into service 4 times for display problems. I was dead set on getting a dv8000 but after hearing about the keyboard dilemma I am a little gun shy. I am now considering getting a dv2000. What would you guys do? Is the dv2000 a better built laptop? I am not a big gamer I mainly used my zd for visual studio 2005. I love the 17 inch screen but hate the weight of my zd.
Thanks Greg

I love the weight of it. Very lightweight. The screen, for me, is fine... easy to work with, great for watching DVD's... this is my only computer, I don't have/use a desktop, and it works great.
As for built quality, it is definitly above most consumer laptops, not as good as most business laptops.
The lid is a special plastic which HP had developed, which is reportedly scratch resistant, and has a high gloss, piano black type sheen. Looks GREAT, but does show fingerprints. Guess I'd rather see some fingerprints, which easily wipe off (HP even includes a soft cloth for their customers) then have a lid which easily scratches, which the earlier dv1000 supposedly did.
Keyboard has a nice feel to it, and again, for MY purposes, works fine. When I'm at my office, I use an external keyboard, so I only use the built in keyboard when on the road, and it's fine. Again, not up to IBM standards, but feels good.
If you can get to a Fry's or some other store to physically check out the dv2000t, I think you'lll be impressed! Really looks nice, the area around the keyboard I believe is metal, and doesn't show fingerprints and (it seems to me) should hold up very well.
The hinges, also, are excellent. This laptop doesn't use a latch to hold it closed, it uses magnets and the hinges are strong enough that it doesn't open unless you want it to. I have to hold down the bottom of the laptop, when lifting the lid, or the bottom simply lifts up along with the lid! That's how strong the magnets and hinges are! It's actually the hinges, I think, because even if I open it about an inch, to the point where the magnets wouldn't still be holding the lid closed, if I don't hold down the base of the laptop with one hand, it'll simply raise up while I'm lifting the lid!
Bottom line, this laptop is a looker. How well it'll hold up, guess we'll only know after a few months or a year, but it does seem well built.
Good luck! If you have any other questions, feel free to ask and I'll try to answer. -
