This is gonna sound weird, but I looked around on this issue and this seems to be what the answer is (surprisingly its a common one)

Run scan disk and defrag a few times each, people have said it starting working after doing that.

Other than that try using a different partition manager.

I bought a dv2000 days ago and I have the same problem. I have defragmented 3 times and scandisked twice...I also tried partitioning using linux-based gparted live CD but I still can't resize the XP partition.

My guess is that the problem comes from all the extra partitions HP creates for recovery (I deleted this one) and quickplay (I didn't delete this one because I would lose the use of the quickplay buttons).

Nothing seems to work...I have found one possible solution http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=59471 but that requires me to completely clean my system and I don't have an XP install CD handy (I'm guessing the recovery dvds won't work since they will put me rite back where i started. Any one have a solution?

I had the same problem in repartitioning my 8339us. Press F10 to change the boot order and boot from optical drive with the partition magic disk See if this allows you to repartition

thanks springr for the advice, I gave scandisk another shot and this time it worked. Turns out I had to do the more thourough check in scandisk, the one where XP has to restart before it can scan...
