uninstall all the un needed programs(ask someone else which programs) go to the control panel proformance and maintence, then click on see basic information about your computer, then go to advanced then click on properties in the proformance area then go to advanced and click on virtual memory and click on custom size and set it for 4096(maxium setting)

theres other settings you can turn off in ur registry and such but i dont feel like tellin you all them someone else will, i done my bit lol

The registery cleaner is perfectly safe. I'd uninstall all un-needed bloatware, and consider reformatting if you want to maximize performance. That can be tricky though; make sure you have all the drivers and the XP cd before you begin. How much RAM do you have? If it's over 1GB, I wouldn't turn virtual memory to max, i'd just let windows manage the size of the swap file. In fact for any amount of RAM i'd let windows manage the settings. I'm not sure why darth_laidher suggested that you adjust the settings.

As far as the screen is concerned: I don't know about hp screens, but if you're happy, I wouldn't worry. Most people worry about leakage, dead/stuck pixels.

Norton is a good progam--I don't know if it is a "trial" version or not, but you should def. have some sort of anti-virus installed. Some people bash norton/macafee because it hogs resources; but it will probably work well for you. If you choose to uninstall it, make sure to put something else back on. AVG/avast!/kapersky are all good free choices.

Hope this helps! Enjoy your new computer!

i sugested that because thats what i use and it havent had any problems and if for some reason you need the virtual memory you got the full amount for it to deal with, the custom setting is there for a reason.

also i noticed that my machine runs faster when i have the maxium settings in virtual memory compaired to letting windows manage that and even if you dont use it, it doesnt hurt anything to have it set that high.

    norton is a hog
get yourself AVG, Avast (both free), or NOD32 (have to pay, but its great and inexpensive). If you need a firewall, ZoneAlarm is free and works great.

there is no good reason to run Norton, imo anyway.

You probably need to add more RAM if you noticed a difference in performance from increasing the size of the swap file. As slow as laptop hard drives are you don't want to be using the swap file any more than you have to.

5400rpm 2.5" drives are a lot slower than 3.5" 7200rpm drives and so you don't want to have to be constantly accessing the hard drive if you are looking for performance. You shouldn't notice a real difference in performance from messing with the page file in today's computers because of the amount of RAM most people now have. The reason it made a difference in the past was because people were running 512MB and less of memory. If you have a gig or more you should just let Windows manage it.

Do I change the setting to 4096 in both "initial setting" and "maximum"? What about the paging file setting? Thanks.

I'm not sure I agree with that. If your swap file is fragmented, that can be bad, and the larger the swap file, the more likely it's fragmented (unless you took care to make it unfragmented). Likewise, having a big clump of unused data in the middle of your disk means that your other files are spread out that much more.

There are several more detailed discussions of this subject at StorageReview, such as this one and this one. Lots of discussion there, though not specifically laptop oriented (some of it is about spanning the pagefile across disks and so on).

well i dont know about anyone else but i keep my os running as smooth as possible since i have a old machine, so its not fragmented i need all the proformance i can get so i dont let it degrade although it will happen sometime.
