When I turn on my HP dv2000t, I get one long beep and two short beeps (despite the title saying 3 long ones), and the screen stays blank. All the button lights light up. I've read elsewhere that I should update my BIOS or whatever, but how am I going to do that if I can't get on my computer to download it? I've downloaded the BIOS update before, but I got a new hard drive in March.
You see, this same problem occurred in October and they took a couple of weeks to fix it (they said 3 days, but HP "forgot" they had my notebook in posession and then put a rush on it). So mid-November I got it back. Apparently they replaced the heat sink because it was faulty, the fan, and then the motherboard as well. All was fine until January when my hard drive failed on me randomly.
I did notice that before I shut off my notebook the night before it started doing the three beeps, it got unusually hot underneath. But with the 12-cell battery, you'd think it's ventilated very well. It wouldn't function properly that day. The next day it did (Thursday 5/22). And then Friday, didn't work again.
Now when my hard drive failed in January, I had 5 days left of my warranty. HP said it would be replaced and returned to me befor the warranty was even up. They then gave me several new dates as a replacement and said they were out of hard drives. It wasn't until 6 weeks later that I got a Western Digital drive instead of the original Seagate one. I suppose it didn't matter since I have owned Western Digital products that worked fine in the past.
Anyway, now that I am outside of warranty, does this pretty much mean they can charge me anything they want, much like a mechanic would do? Are they likely to say I need a new this, or that, just to make a quick buck off of me? Can I purchase another warranty, and then wait a couple of weeks to say something is wrong with it or will they know?
By the way, if it is a video card failure, I have a nVidia GeForce GO 7200.
Any words of wisdom? Thanks.

check to see if your model is in the recall page http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01087277&lc=en&cc=us
If it is, then you are entitled to free repair even if your original warranty is expired by 1 year -
that happened to a friend of mine, he turned it on and three beeps could be heard. he just took out the battery, put it back. and it worked normally again. it might work? sounds like the same problem

Reseat the ram sticks.

same thing happened to me with a pavilion dv6000z. they said the motherboard was at fault and would take like the same money to fix as to get a new laptop!!!
-
Have you checked your ram?

It isn't 1 long and 2 shorter beeps?
-
Yes, JP, I'm sorry I misinformed everyone. It is in face one long beep and two short ones. Would this be a video card problem?

Its a definate motherboard problem. It cant be fixed by the end user. It needs to be sent in for motherboard replacement/repairs
I actually had the exact same problem (same laptop & gpu). 3 beeps, 1 long 2 short, nothing on screen.
You are looking at about $200-500 for a new motherboard
You notebook should still function at very random times. Once it does, you should keep it powered ON for aslong as you can and back up all your stuff while you still can. When you shutdown/restart, say hello to the 3 beeps again. Mine turned on after like 300 tries or so -
Unfortunately my product number doesn't fall under the extended warranty. Why? I don't know. I mean it seems like everyone else with a dv2000 or 2200 is having this problem. The warranty states that if you own a model dv2200t and your screen won't display anything, it falls under the extended warranty... but then goes on to list some product numbers. If I fall under the same problems, they should fix it. I mean if my motherboard fails TWICE in 6 months... shouldn't that say there is a problem with the motherboard?
I called HP technical support today, and as usual my call was directed to India. The people who answer the phone are either too mellow or not very helpful. This woman was alright and she actually offered to put in a request for me to get my product number included in the extended warranty. But she said if others call in with the same product number and same issue, it might push them to do it faster. -
Same problem here Ill also call today my PN is RM668AV Geforce 7200
