I had a number of questions on this thread about my laptop hitting 82°C (watching movies or playing game), the CPU start temp throttling, and then it would just instantly power off. This was on nice, well-ventilated flat surfaces and everything.

Well, after 2 trips to the depot for new motherboards and no appreciable change, they agreed to build me a new one. Still no idea what causes it, but I'm guessing it's a heat problem - cause when it hits 82, it usually dies within 1-2 minutes.

Really sad when you can't even watch a 1 hour streaming Heroes episode without the pc shutting itself off. Sad, because I was borrowing an AMD version and it never had trouble. Hope it's not a Core2Duo problem.

Thanks everyone for the help, and thanks to HP for "Doing The Right Thing"(tm)

I thought of underclocking it - and then said to myself: He self, you should be able to watch a 1 hour streaming video or play Quake 3 Arena for more than 20 minutes before it shuts itself off without undervolting it. It's under warranty, get a machine that works 100% - since you paid 100%. I did the do diligence with tech support and now I'll be getting a new machine that I can run without fear.

I agree that it's probably the CPU or power supply at this point since the MB was replaced twice. But if something is wrong now with the CPU it sure ain't gonna get better with time. And I plan on keeping this laptop for years.
