    Hi.

I just got my dv2000t a couple days ago and for the most part it is just wonderful. I can't believe how cool looking this notebook is! And it's so quiet compared to any computer I've ever had.

One thing that has me baffled is that it has taken to turning itself on. It did this last night and I though it was a fluke but then tonight I heard the Windows startup sound while I was watching TV. How odd I though. Then about 10 minutes later I noticed the lights on the front of my closed notebook were on. It did it again!

Does anyone know what's going on here? Is my notebook haunted?

    Help!

    Thanks,
    Richard

First of all, do the BIOS list some type of option in which the computer will turn on at a preprogrammed time? My old M140 did that because of a bug in the BIOS. Turning that option off fixed that for me.

Second of all, are there any programs that are scheduled to run and also have permission to wake the computer? Start->Control Panel->Scheduled Tasks for info on this.

Finally, as I almost always recommend when something strange happens - run a virus scan with a decent (to do date). It doesn't really matter which one (even Norton is fine), and more than one is good too. But if there is a virus on the machine, some really strange things can happen.

BTW, I'm guessing that you have the default factory installation of Windows?

    Thanks for your response...

The first thing I checked was the BIOS and no, there wasn't any setting that I could find that would turn the machine on (ie. wake on LAN). In fact, there isn't much in there that the user can alter anyway.

I didn't think of Scheduled Tasks so I'm glad you suggested it. There was only one task listed and it was set up to run just once a week at 8:00PM on Friday (full virus scan). So I don't think this was it.

I did run a virus scan as you suggested and it didn't find anything.

Yes, this is the default factory installation of Windows.

    Two thoughts:

    1. There was a pop-up from Norton saying there was a "problem" (which turned out to be that the program wanted to run a full scan) and I did that. Maybe Norton has something internal that runs once a day to remind you.

    2. The wireless needs to renew it's IP address (doubt this).

I'm really surprised that nobody else seemingly has run into this. I am equally surprised that a notebook computer can turn itself on from a complete shut down (not hibernation or stand by). Any further help is appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Richard

Well, I think I've solved my problem! :)

It seems that my XBOX 360 Universal Remote is the culprit. Tonight I played a game of Zuma and when I was done I hit the remote to turn off the XBOX 360. I looked over at the HP and sure enough it had started up. The odd thing is the reverse isn't true, I cannot turn on/off my XBOX 360 with the HP remote.

Now I have to either keep these two in separate rooms or figure out if I can turn off the remote functionality of the HP until I need it. Anyone know if this is possible?

This still doesn't explain how the notebook started up by itself when I unplugged it from the AC adapter the other night but that might have been because the system was still busy or I am not remembering it exactly right.

Just try putting something over the IR port (on the front to the left of the mic port). Something opaque would be best.

I have a similar problem with my DV6500T. I called tech support and am shipping it in for repair. I too thought maybe a remote from my media center PC was causing the laptop to turn on by itself, but it does it when it is in my backpack as well. So I doubt that is the issue. After some reading, I think it may turn out to be an over sensitive quick launch button. I'll see if it is fixed when I get i back from HP. If not, I will call and complain an hopefully be able to get the entire laptop replaced with a new on. It has been happening since day one and I call HP several times about the issue. This is the first time I am able to send it in for repair, since I use it at school and couldn't be without it last semester. They say there is a 10 day turn around time in getting it repaired and shipped back to me. So I'll just have to wait and see....

If all else fails, call Ghost Busters...
