Is there any other use of the webcam besides using it on an instant messenger application? Is there free software out there that will let me use it to take still shots or possibly even video?

You can do it from within quickplay.

Oh yeah, I uninstalled that because I already have applications to play music and DVDs and look at pictures. That, and I was tired of accidentally opening QuickPlay when I'd wipe dust from the top of the keyboard.

If you have Office 2003 you can reply with a video message. You can also make a video and send to other people.
