Yesterday, I was using my notebook waiting for class to start. I put it in hibernation mode as I usually do (I restart it once every two or three days). After 90 minutes, class had a break and I turned on my computer.
Beeeeeeep, beep-beep! I thought a fire alarm was going off until I noticed it was my notebook. The screen remained blank. I closed the lid and opened it thinking it was possibly the video card, as it does glitch from time to time (nVidia GeForce Go 7200).
I manually shut down and tried it again. Beeeeeep, beep-beep! So I just shut it down. Tried it again when I got home. Same thing.
Today it did the same thing, but I decided to leave it on. After 10 minutes, it shut down on it's own. Turned it back on, same beeping, this time it shut off after 4 minutes. The third time I turned it on, it actually started up normally, but then went into the screen where it asked if I'd like to start Windows normally or run it through the recommended fix. I ran it through the fix and it restarted and once again the beeps.
It turned off on its own 4 minutes later, turned it back on, then it turned off 2 minutes later. Turned it on again and it started up with the options again. This time I chose to start Windows normaly. Everything is normal, but I'm afraid it's gonna keep doing this. And I will post back later if it does.
Even if everything turns out alright, I still would like to know why it did that. Anyone else have this same problem before with their HP notebooks?
-
When you hibernated the laptop at the start of class, it may not have shut down completely. This could have made the laptop overheat and shutdown, offering a possible explanation for the "start windows normally" dialogue. As for the beeps, I cannot explain. Have you added memory to that laptop by any chance?
-
Oddly enough, I've noticed a few times when hibernating my laptop before going to bed, it would still be on in the morning. When I hibernated yesterday before class, I carried it with me as opposed to putting it in my backpack as I normally do.
When I was using it prior to that, the vent was not blocked as it was rested, centered, on a wooden arm of a chair I was sitting in. My class room was dark and I had the laptop on my lap, so it wasn't still on or anything like that. As for shutting down because of overheating, I'm not so sure of that since it wasn't even hot at all.
I have not added any memory or any hardware to it since I purchased it directly from HP in February.
I have restarted my computer twice since posting. Each time, this is what happens:
1. Power on
2. One long beep and two short beeps (both quite loud)
3. Blank screen
4. Shuts down on its own after about 2 minutes
Each time, the third power on lets me choose if I want to run a recommended fix or run Windows normally. Trying to fix doesn't help, so I choose to run normally.

its the fact that it overheated and is telling you that it did, and says press F1 or something. thats what the beep is from
-
My desktop computer BIOS beeps when theres a boot failure. The amount of beeps and how long the beep is tells you whats wrong with it. Maybe the same thing for laptops?
I never use hibernate, i tried using it before and it never wakes back up for some reason. I have to shut it down through the power button and start it back up again -
My DV2500t does the beeping sound but I never waited for it to shutdown (too loud). This happened when I flash changed the Bios to F13
-
So I'm not the only one.
I woke up an hours. Turn on the laptop "BEEP BEEP BEEP" with a pitch black screen. Like the tread starter I had hibernated the laptop, went to the bath room, when I got back to my room it was turned off like it should.
I have tried to turn it on several times now but still no picture. I'm going to take the battery out and let it rest for an hour or so. I'll report back in a few hours. -
Okay. Almost 24 hours have passed since my screen went into a deep coma. I have turned by computer on several times and it still beeps three time with no image showing up on the screen. Connecting it to an external monitor doesn't show and image either.
I have even tried taken both hard drives out and fire it up but still no picture.
Anyone who has any tips. My warranty is valid another 26 days but I rather not send it in since it will take 3-4 weeks to get it back.
Help!!!!!!!!!!!! -
just a suggestion.. have you tried taking out your ram? like test it with one and the other individually.
i ran into a similar problem where it kept restarting on its own -
^^
I did that before I read you post and I did it just 5 minutes ago, still a black screen.
After having done some reseach on the net I found this:
one short Passed (no errors)
two short Any non-fatal error
one long, two short Video failure
one long, three short Keyboard Controller failure (applies to 286, 386 and 486)
It seem like my graphic card has given up and I can't do anything but send it in which I really don't want. The last time I sent the laptop in it took 4 weeks until I got it back.
But this time I don't have a choice since I basically got a 1 250 euro brick sitting on my desk. They will probably have to change the whole mother board. I hope they don't have anyones left supporting my CPU. I'm tired of AMD and want something cooler from intel. Too much heat developing at the moment, especially when having aero turned on which might have contributed to the overload. -
I had the three beeps problem and I sent it to HP and just got it back after 7 days. It works fine but now everytime I leave my comp idle for 10 or so minutes it turns off by itself. No hibernate or sleep or anything, it just turns off.
-
Check your power management settings
-
I am now having these exact same problem. I shut it down safely and properly last night and i woke up this morning with 3 very loud beeps. Very very frustrating and annoying.
Did you fix it by any chance? Or anyone else found a fix to this?
Please help... -
They said they replaced the motherboard, the heat sink, and my battery. Unfortunately, they sent a smaller capacity battery. They said the 12-cell was on backorder and they eventually sent me another one, but it was another 6-cell. I called them and they said they'd call me back. It sounds like they think I'm scamming them for free batteries because their records show they did send out the 12-cell battery. But it is indeed the 6-cell with a sticker with the 12-cell model number sticker attached to it. Lame.
I would send it in to HP as soon as possible. Hopefully you're still under warranty. Just know that you'll be assigned a case manager and if you have questions, you'll have to talk to that same person. And if they're busy, they'll have to call you back at their earliest convenience and it's really not convenient for you though. -
anybody with a NVIDIA GeForce 8400M video card experience this?
-
Thanks for the reply..Unfortunately i cant afford to send away this laptop. Luckily i backed up most of my stuff on my external hdd but theres still abit of stuff thats left in there.
Is there any other fixes for this?
Im still yet to try the hard boot (hold power button for 30 seconds) and reseating the memory.
-
i have a dv2000t with vista ultimate 1G of ram and i think the key thing GeForce Go7200. i also had the 1 long beep before the 2 short beeps. i tried starting it a few times with no luck and still a blank screen. eventually i let it sit for about 30 minutes and it started with the option to start windows normally. hopefully HP will figure out what the problem is and let us know a way to fix it, until then, just post up if you have any clues on why it happens or how to stop it from happening again
-
yes i think it is the geforce 7200 thats the culprit. I still havent sent mine in for repairs but i have tried starting it up a few times with no luck. Just annoying beeps.
I noticed that the gfx card area of the laptop gets hotter easier. Im definate that the card if fried but some people seem to be still be spontaniously work and start up -
Okay an unexpected turn of events..
I was fiddling around and my laptop came back alive again but i cant shut it down or else it will take forever to start it back up again. My card is not totally fried.. maybe something is just loose.
I guess ill be leaving it on for a while till the system completely fries then send it back to HP as they are bound to replace the whole computer anyway
Im scared to shut it down or put it to sleep as it is insanely hard to get it to startup again. -
I am returning my dv9000 for the same issue. Happened to me after a BIOS flash: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=203697. So the consensus here is it has something to do with the graphic module? I'm wondering if it's more of a general connection or heat-related issue where after so many heating/cooling cycles something gets disconnected. I never could get mine to post.
-
Ive been experimenting and i figured out how to make it temporarily work... turn the computer on for about and let it idle for about 30mins even if nothing is on the screen
Youll noltice that the videocard area will start to get hot. The solution is too overheat the videocard and it magically works again and soon as you turn off and back on.
Its really weird.. im guessing it is a heating/cooling cycle that caused this -
Just wondering what bios version everyone is using? My laptop died about 2 weeks ago with the same problem (hp dv2000t, bios f39, t7200 cpu, geforce7200, vista, 2 gigs ram) and recently when my friend updated her bios to f39 (v3000t, bios f39, t2300 cpu, geforce7200, vista, 2 gigs ram) her laptop stop working with the same 3 beep problem. Was wondering whether this could be the source of the problem?
-
-
No, I actually mean f39 bios, sorry kev99sl, I think you're problem isn't exactly related to the dv2000t problems namely because all these problems were derived from the geforce7200 module failure. If I'm not mistaken, the dv9000t has a totally different graphics module and from reading your thread the 3 beeps (1 long 2 short) is different from your 1-1-2 beeping. Just thinking out loud here.
-
I dont think it matters which BIOS version your using as its the gfx card itself. The beeps will always be the same since its all pheonix bios. Ive never updated mine cause it was working fine and temps were good. I think it was F29 BIOS
Ive managed to be able to start up my computer from the death beeps a few times now. Sometimes takes me up to 6 hours to get it to boot properly.
Right now im trying to fry the whole computer since the whole thing is going to be replaced anyway. Might aswell make the most out of it. A good excuse to overclock -
I also have the same DV2200 CTO notebook with GeForce 7200 gfx card bought in April 2007 and same problem 1 long beep and 2 short beeps with blank screen. After trying several times it will boot normally. Somt times it asks for hardward/software problem detection and fix while booting. But even if you choose to repair no luck.
I spent almost 50 hrs with Hp cusomter support in last 45days. I sent my laptop to HP 3 times. First time they replace with wrong grpahics card and problem not fixed. setn it back again second time, again replaced with another wrong graphics card without fixing the acctul problem. Now third time the laptop is with Hp, I don't have hopes with HP sending me back with working condition.
Do you guys have any other suggestion where to repair? Any alternate repair center.

i saterted having the same problem since yesterday, i found out that if the system is preheated, and restarted it works fine, i have dv2197ea.
i left the system on for about half and hour, and restarted it and it worked fine, but when the system is cold it wont restart. my guess is it is some thing to do with hardware not software, it is not conected to windows XP either. -
atifroome: Been there, done that. Start backing up your stuff, your computer will completely fail sooner or later. Only way to fix it is for them to replace the motherboard
If you preheat it for that long and feel the speaker area near the power button and HDD, youll notice it will be really hot. This is not good. -
flipfire, how long did it take your computer to fail completly? I've been having a similar issue for a couple of weeks.
-
Sooner or later it will fail to startup no matter how much you pre-heat it. Took about 2 weeks and stopped booting into windows
-
Thanks, I figured as much. The computer is going to be sent in to be repaired soon but I was hoping to have it work for a bit longer so I can back everything up properly this time.
Does anyone know how long it takes for hp to fix the issue? -
i tried one more thing and after that i get a boot on every push of the button, i actually baked my notebook, i turned it on and kept it between blanket for 1.5 hours, when i took it out it was so hot, that it kept on shutting down on windows, i waited for a while, and finaly the system started behaving and the problem of 1 long and 2 short was is gone, i can acually start my computer when ever i want to with out preheating it now.
-
My dv2000z with the 6150 gpu is doing the same thing. Blank screen, 3 beeps! At first it would start after a few tries, but in the last week I haven't gotten it to start. Luckly I backed everything up
. I just got my fedex box today and will be sending it back in the next few days. Any ideas on turn around time? I'm a college student and this is my only computer
I'm thinking of purchasing another notebook, from a different manufacture, and giving the hp to my sister once they figure it out.
-
backing up data is not a big problem, even if you system is dead, all you have to do is take out the hard drive and get an external usb kit to connect the hard drive to another computer, and use it.

Yesterday, I was using my notebook saw a movie and then i stopped the movie and talk with my friend After 5 minutes i came back my laptop screen is blank and I think its going to hibernation mode then i try to came back. At last I manually shut down amd tried it again. its do 1 long beep and 2 short beep! and Then i cheaked the RAM and refit. Now It is same podition. plz help me!
I have HP laptop,1GB RAM, Nivia card -
Please do not double post.
There is nothing much you can do at the moment. The only solution we have found for this issue is to replace the motherboard.
Please check this page if your notebook is under the extended warranty recall:

Same problem here Ill also call today my PN is RM668AV Geforce 7200
-
yup no luck I was denied
-
sorry to revive the thread, but i recently ran into this problem. my friend suggested that i disable the graphics card through the device manager. does anyone think that this would work? would my computer automatically go to integrated graphics? does it even have integrated graphics?
-
No it doesnt have integrated graphics
-
it seems the mother board will be replace why not to exploit since i will have to pay the mother board replacement money -
I've got the same problem with my dv2000t (P/N: RM668AV).
I spoke with HP support but my product isn't covered under the limited warranty service enhancement and they quoted $400 for a repair. He said if they see enough issues with these models then maybe the limited warranty service enhancement will be extended to include them.
I suggest that everyone posts to the HP Business Support Forum thread "dv2000t 1 long, 2 short beeps, no display" located at: http://forums11.itrc.hp.com/service...47626+1221952051301+28353475&threadId=1191277 -
I was having this issue this morning, and I turned it off by popping out the battery and popped it back in. Then I left it untouched for about 5 hours and tried starting it up again. IT WORKS NOW! Matter of fact, I'm using it to type this right now.
However, I'm afraid this might happen again and it would catch me at a bad time (back to school). What are my chances? Could you guys give me some tips on how to prevent this and what the cause is?
Thank you so much. -
Each time it came back with scratches on the LCD, which I pointed out on the 2nd & now most recent (last Wednesday) return. HP is now saying my notebook needs a $417 repair because get this, the LCD is scratched! Not because it makes the one long & 2 short beeps!
I was told by the rep on Saturday to call today & escalate it to a manager because no video is cover under the enhanced program.
I wrote a note explaining THEY did it when for some unknown reason they replaced the mint screen bezel on the last repair.
I'll let you all know how I make out. -
Sorry, I forgot to update.
I called a case mgr & long story short they repaired my PC under warranty & sent it back, but they did not replace the LCD, as they shouldn't have needed to do since it works! -
Hi guys. I know this Thread is very old and I'm actually a person who reads forum but not really post things, but i thought this might help many of you save a lot so i thought i should create an account here and post this here so even helps 1 of you, still is good
so if it did worked, please tell others who need. I have a dv2000 which is out of warranty last 2-3 months and I'm a university student and i'm actually out of money. So i couldn't bother sending my laptop for $400 repair.
I had the same problem with blank screen and 3 beep and after a while i found out ifi put my laptop on table instead of the cooler and i leave it on for 30 mins until it gets hot and quick restart, it would actually come up, and then i put it on my aluminum cooler back so it gets cool fast and avoid possible damages as much as i can. (This part you all know already)
Now, Here's what i did and it started working like before, (so far 3 times turning my laptop on and no error) i was too tired and i told my self lets give it a try opening it up. But before that, i actually did a BIOS downgrade from F39 to F29 on windows 7 (win Vista couldn't open the HP Bios program). Now, please note that i never upgraded my BIOS on this laptop before. As far as last time i checked (during the error time) it was F39. So i downgraded it to F29 (downloaded from HP website) and i did restart it and still no luck. So i went ahead to open the whole laptop. I took out the battery and opened the H.D.D, then both RAMs and even WIFI card but something came up and i had to leave my laptop like that before opening the rest, for 10-20 min and when i came back, no mood to continue opening. So i closed it up and with no believe, when i clicked the power button, it was on with no error. and for the next few time it turned it on, no error. Now, i did opened the RAMs, HDD and ... before many time but never got lucky.
(If you want to downgrade the BIOS, you need to turn on your laptop and wait for ~ 30 min to get hot, then restart so it can boot your win in order to execute BIOS software)
What i think makes it working is downgrading the BIOS from F39 to F29 and then taking out the RAMs and HDD for some time and giving the laptop a hard reset so the older bios setting wont sit on the RAMs. I'm no expert and i don't know if that works for anyone and i just wanted to share it. So no hard filling if it didn't work for you....
But i really hope this helps a little bit at least.
