hey guys,
i searched this forum for a few days looking for answers before registering and asking, but please forgive me if this has been covered already.
i have a dv2220us i purchased sometime in late 06 early 07 had a few issues over the years nothing major.
sunday 04/02/10 i pick my laptop up slide my finger across touchpad and nothing happens. quick launch buttons are lit, power light is on and wifi selector is orange while in on position. hmmm...i power it down then start it back up. it's much quieter than it has ever been and extremely cool. i pull hard drive cover and notice it's not spinning at all.
i remove hdd from chassis plug it in to coolmax cd-350 and my wife's dv4t hdd starts clicking, buzzing, beeping and grinding. i'm certain it's dead and i don't care if i'm able to salvage anything from it.
i purchased a wd6400bevt as a replacement, but i never made back up disks. i've installed the new drive all quick launch lights are on power light is on and wifi is orange. i know this hdd has no os or drivers, but i was hoping the monitor would wake up.
am i completely dead here?
sorry so wordy...wanted to get all the details out there.
thanks in advance
vincent

you should be getting a POST screen and error msg (no OS found or HDD does not exist) try pressing F10 to go into the BIOS. Aside from that, perform a hard reset (battery out, AC power out, hold power button down for 30 seconds, AC power back in, and attempt to boot)
Edit: I don't mean to rain on your parade but you may be looking at a motherboard failure here (although it seems unlikely both the HDD and the board would die at the same time) your motherboard has the Infamous GeForce 6150 integrated GPU which has had scores of problems.

HP had a free repair program going on for these but that was only out to 1 year after the factory warranty ended. As I understand it now they are offering discounted repairs since the free repair period is up. -
thanks, but that did nothing. i never put the battery in as it's always plugged in. i removed the power cord, held power button down for 30+ seconds, plugged it back in and booted still black screen. i did have to send it back once for wifi card failure just outside of warranty, but they fixed it free.
has anyone ever replaced the mobo on this thing? is it even worth it looks like they can be had new or refurbed for $85-150.
thanks again. -

I think your gpu is dead. Google G86 and G84 faulty chips. I suppose you have geforce 8400 gs on that thing.

Yeah like scias23 said your gpu is probably dead! the same thing happen to my computer last november, everything seem to work but the screen was black and there was nothing I could do to fix it.
