I did a re-install of Vista, and the DVD driver worked fine using the default Windows driver. After installing several of the HP drivers, I decided to do a reboot, but because my laptop was stuck on the "Logging off" screen for 10+ minutes I thought it had crashed and so I turned off power by holding the power button down. Now my DVD recognizes a disk and can view properties (such as drive capacity) but thinks they are all blank. Is there a way that I can regain use of the DVD besides doing another install?

    Thanks

Ouch...sorry man, but you probably screwed some files up. I've seen those updates take over a hour sometimes, and the last time I did that I fried my installation. I'd say start fresh, but there might be a way to salvage the situation...I just don't know how.

Assuming that you didn't do a firmware update to the dvd drive itself causing a malfunction or failure, I would uninstall the drive directly from Device Manager and let Windows redetect & install it automatically to see if this fixes your problem.

Also go to IDE Controllers in Device Manager, expand and select either the Primary or Secondary channel by right-clicking and select Properties. In the window that opens, go to the Advanced Settings tab and check to see if the Current Transfer Mode is DMA. It could be stuck in PIO mode, which would impede the drives normal operation.

Be sure to check both the Primary and Secondary IDE channels for this, as I'm not sure which one is being utilized by the dvd drive on your machine (as you have a SATA hard drive).

Sorry for the late reply. I simply went with a re-install and the DVD drive works fine now.

metalsklug2k2, are you referring to WLAN drivers? My Vista installation worked fine without any extraneous drivers for the LAN; I installed the downloaded Broadcom drivers from HP.
