the 2500 does not have sata disable in the bios I wonder what the 6500 has in the bios. The other problem would be how do you get the drivers to work in xp with these notebooks. Hp is not going to support drivers for this notebook or even list them. The 2000 and 6000 had XP and then vista. Unless HP updates the bios to disable the sata which I do not think they will you will have to use a third party software like lite on to put the sata driver on a custom copy of xp.
-
The dv2500 uses the same BIOS as the dv6500. So I believe you will run into an issue with both units. If you use Google to search for nLite and slipstreaming there are several good articles that make it fairly easy to add the needed SATA drivers to a custom made Windows XP CD.
HP is starting to add drivers to the Windows XP section for the dv2500 and dv6500:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3411249&lang=en
It is far from complete but they are adding stuff to it every couple of days as they are testing drivers. Also many of the drivers and softwre Apps found in the 'SWSETUP' directory will work in both Windows XP and Vista, not all but most. I know that HP Quickplay version 3.0 + all works with Vista, even though you can search this site for a solution. -
I still have an issue with the duel boot in the 6000t unknown driver. I can imagine what the 6500 would be like with no help from Hp. They really are no help anyway on serious issues. My daughter has a toshibia notebook and the support is so much better then HP and there support is in nortrh america. The notebook is three years old and they had a class action against them and the notebook is back at there repair site. Took it to the ups store they packed it and sent it back no charge, see if you get that from HP.
-
If you are getting an unknown driver it is due to either of the two item not being installed:
1. HP Quicklaunch Buttons.
2. 5-in-1 Card Reader driver. -
I'm interested in putting XP with Ubuntu on my 6500T. Vista is very hard to work with. Took me a few hours to get the wireless working. It would connect but then the internet didn't work. The error messages said to contact an admin, wow, that really helps me. Finally got it working after selecting WPA-SKA for the security type, WEP didn't work.
-
right on the money with the quick play button . Well I may be getting a 6500 notebook and probably will have to use lite on and put the xp operating system on a new disc with the hdd sata ini file. Never done it before but i will . Good move buying from costco. Vista takes a lot of getting use to . When microsoft comes out with a new operating system i will not dive into it until the first service pack comes out.
-
I am going to document my steps in order to get XP on the system. Hopefully others will join in with helpful tips.
The first step is to download the Sata drivers to slip stream into XP using Nlite. You can't use the \SWSETUP folder on the Vista system, because those drivers are for Vista only.
I went on the Intel site and searched for 965 chipset driver. Two choices came up, GM965 and PM965. GM965 has the dedicated graphics driver, PM965 does not, so I'm going with GM965. I downloaded the ZIP file. When I open it, there is a directory called \ALL which is for Windows XP systems. There are a bunch of INF and Catalog files in there.
My first question, is what files do I integrate into the slip stream XP build? Is it ok if I put all of them in there, or do I only want to do the Sata driver? Which files do I integrate using Nlite?
There other problem I'm seeing is that there is no SWSETUP folder for XP, only Vista. I'll have a make a SWSETUP folder on my own. That will be very tedious and I'm not even sure it can be done. If HP had all the XP drivers on their site, then I could download them, but they don't yet. -
What I would do trial and error put the sata hdd ini file on a made up lite on xp disc. See if that works and you can load Xp only takes a half hour to load the operating system. Take what ever downloads hp has for xp and install them Go to HP and try other xp downloads for a similar notebook and see what happens. Go to the mfg websites for devices that are on your notebook that have question marks.
-
I would only include the SATA drivers in the slipstream XP disc. Also some of the drivers in the SWSETUP will work with XP, but you are much better off trying to find XP specific stuff. HP's website is starting to populate the dv2500 and dv6500 with XP drivers.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3411249&lang=en#
I would also check the dv6000 series support as you could probably use the drivers for he 5-in-1 Media Card Drivers software, Bluetooth Drivers, Audio Drivers (You will need the Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) Bus Driver as they are not built into Windows XP), Modem Drivers, Web Cam drivers (Use from SWSETUP) and Help and Support.

Docangle, in your DV2500T review, you mention wiping the drive clean. How did you do this? Did you do it with the Vista Ultimate Disk? I tried running Acronis disk cleanser and the CD doesn't find any drives. Why? Because there's no way to disable Sata. So how did you start over?
Ok, I figured out how to slipstream the drivers into Nlite. You have to download the Intel Matrix Storage Manager for the GM965 chipset. These drivers have to be installed on the 6500T or they won't install. It puts the files into C:\Programs\Intel\Intel Matrix Storage Manager. There's two directories, one says driver, one says Driver64. You need the one that says Driver. Copy the files to a USB drive or burn them to a CD. Copy them to the computer where Nlite is installed. Run Nlite and slipstream the drivers into the XP folder you copied from the CD. Create the ISO with Nlite. The only choices I have clicked are add drivers and create ISO. Burn it with Nero and boot the 6500T with the CD. XP will boot, give a partition menu, and then install. I made my XP partition 20 gigs, left 60 gigs for a data drive, and 30 unpartitioned (Ubuntu).
XP installed fine. Now it's a question of getting all the drivers installed. Then I have to do it all again so I can write a guide with pictures. A crippled XP system feels much better than Vista at this point. There's actually not a lot of yellow question marks. They appear under other devices for Audio, Ethernet, Fingerprint sensor, Modem, Network Controller, and Video Controller. I think I can knock most of these out.
HP site is timing out with the Quicklaunch and Synaptics drivers. But I got all the Intel drivers installed. Chipset, Graphics, then wireless. It connected on the first try and I can surf the net. I went to control panel and clicked on USB video device and poof, there I was on the screen. This is looking really good now. -
try using the quicklaunch from Vista SWSETUP, I think it will work. I just downloaded the synaptic drivers right now, i did not get a timeout.
-
I believe your modem is different model then the dv6000t may have to go to there website. You have to put quickplay driver in or you will have a question mark. Keep up the good work .
-
I had to download the HP files from the laptop. IE and Firefox time out on my main computer. It appears the audio driver is incorrect. After installing all the HP files, I still have yellow question marks for
Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus
Base System Device
Base System Device
Base System Device
Ethernet Controller
Fingerprint Sensor
HP Integrated Module
Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus
I tried installing the UAA first, that doesn't give any error message. When I install the audio (Sp34204) it says, "Driver Installation Failed: Could not find the Media device for this driver." I'll have to search for a better driver on that one.
Wireless assistant and the touchpad are working. -
your modem is I believe motorola. Can you get on the internet with XP. I am beginning to think if i get a 6500 it will not be a good idea if I want a duel boot.
-
Did you try the modem drivers form the SWSETUP?
Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus = Conexant High Definition Audio
Base System Device = 5-in-1 Card Reader Drivers
Ethernet Controller = Marvell Yukon 88E8039 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller
Fingerprint Sensor = AuthenTech Inc. AES2501A Personal Identification Device
HP Integrated Module = HP Integrated Bluetooth Module
Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus = Either Motorola Modem or HDAUDIO Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP
Download the 5-in-1 Card Readers drivers and the Bluetooth drviers from the dv6000t Windows XP download section of HP's website:

http://www.marvell.com/drivers/driverDisplay.do?dId=175&pId=3
AuthenTech Inc. AES2501A:
Try uing the drivers from the Misc1 directory on SWSETUP. The software can be dowloaded from HP:

Drivers:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...softwareitem=ob-48363-1&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN
I am not sure the software will work in Windows XP but it is worth shot. -
Thanks for the explanations of what I'm missing. I didn't try the drivers from SWSETUP yet.
Yes, I can get on the internet. When I installed the Intel wireless driver, it connected on the first try with no problems and I was surfing. Downloaded Firefox, imported my favorites using Mozback, and that works great.
I'm at work for a few more hours and won't get to try the drivers until later tonight. I've started my web site documenting all of this, it's a work in progress.
Install XP on DV6500T -
I like your web site keep us up to date and I will try and keep this thread on the front page. A little more detail on how you put your sata driver on the made up windows disc. would not hurt. I probably would no how to do it but a little backup is nice.
-
Thanks for the kind words. I'm going to add pictures and put the files in my web space for download. I made good progress tonight.
The 5 in 1 driver was correct. (sp33604)
The fingerprint driver (sp35337) and software (sp35640) was correct and works, I scanned my fingerprint.
The bluetooth installed (sp32883), but gave me an error saying it couldn't load. So I went looking for a Wincomm driver, but that wouldn't load. Then I put my laptop to sleep while I walked the dog, came back, and when I restarted the driver box came up, loaded the driver for it, and installed it correctly. Go figure on that one, now I'll have to find out exactly what happened when I do it all over again. That wouldn't sound to good for me to say, "Walk your dog, come back, and the driver will magically install."
The ethernet is a Reltek RTL8101. I downloaded the driver from the web site (RTL8169_8139_810x_663), it installed, then I had to go back and install another driver for it RTL8168_8101E Nic Driver.
The audio is also Reltek, I downloaded file WDM_R167 and that worked after the reboot.
The Modem is a Motorola SM56. The driver loaded, but needed a help file that was found in the SWSETUP folder of the Vista drivers. I'll have to go back and check that one when I do it again.
When trying to run any setup from the Vista SWSETUP, it immediately says this is for Vista only and stops.
I have no yellow question marks now. Everything is working. Now it's on to Ubuntu, then I have to do it all over again and take pictures for my web site. It's a proud feeling to see all the little icons in the tray knowing that everything works. I'm typing this from the laptop downstairs at my dining room table.
Thanks a lot for the help Docangle. -
Glad to be of service. I am going to install Window XP on a spare 2.5" SATA drive this weekend. I all ready made my custom Windows XP Boot Disc and made a CD with the needed drivers. It sounds like the main differences with the dv2500t and the DV6500t is the Sound, Modem, Touchpad and Wired Network Adapters are different. The Bluetooth drivers sometimes do not get installed on the first try, you have to go into Device Manager, delete the yellow check marked Bluetooth driver, and hit the search for new devices icon.
-
I'll have to note the differences for my guide. Keep track of the exact HP drivers you use for the DV2500T and where to find them. Then I can cut and paste the links to my web site. That helps a lot.
The Intel drivers will be the same.
It was weird on the Bluetooth. I came back from the walk, the laptop was sleeping, I pushed the power button, the screen came up, and the little box in the lower right corner of the screen said "New Hardware Found" so I installed it that way and it worked. Yet the first time I did it, there was the yellow exclamation point in the device driver table. Maybe the 2nd time, it found something on the DVD drive. I had the SWSWETUP DVD in the drive from Vista. You can't run any SETUP EXEs from the Vista DVD, but it will search the drive.
I've been reading up on doing the triple boot. That part seems easy. The key is to use the Ubuntu CD to make the partitions. There are 4 that have to be made. But basically, it's install XP, Vista, then Ubuntu with the swap.
I've updated the web site, still no pictures but I have links to all the files.
XP on DV6500T -
Hello,
apparently something is wrong with DV9500t, please look at this thread
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=125663
Did the Intel XP driver work on your 6500 or 2500 at all?
As I wrote in that thread, even I am inside Vista trying to install Intel's Vista driver, the screen will go blank. Any idea on this? thanks in advance. -
to robvia;
In the Intel web site there are three sata driver downloads which one did you use the first one. Second on your recovery disc how come you used 9 cd's instead of maybe 2 dvd's third when you made your xp disc and started installing XP How did it give you the partition option??? -
Hi TakTakB, sorry to hear you are having problems. Yes, the graphics driver was downloaded from this page here and it worked.
http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/intelgm965/sb/CS-025753.htm
I loaded my DV6500T just like my web site says. First I booted from the XP CD which has the Sata drivers slipstreamed (Intel Matrix Storage Manager). Then I partitioned the drive and installed XP. The screen was working at this time. Next I installed the Chipset drivers, which is the file in the middle of the web page (Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility). Next I installed the graphics driver. I ran the EXE, rebooted, and then installed the wireless driver. Each one was for the GM965. Not sure why the DV9500T would be different. What you'll have to do is figure out if your integrated graphics is different from the 6500T, then search the Intel site for a new driver.
Don't mean to sound obvious, but did you pick Windows XP Professional in the drop down box when it asks what type of Operating System you have?
The other thing to mention, is that I'm using a fully up to date version of XP that was updated as of May of this year. Does your version of XP have SP2 in it, and is it current?
To Denmick, I used the Sata Drivers on this page
http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/intelgm965/sb/CS-025753.htm
First they have to be installed on the DV6500T. It places the files in a folder on the C Drive called C:\Programs\Intel\Intel Matrix Storage Manager. Get the folder called Driver and move it to your machine that has Nlite on it.
Why did I use 9 CDs? Because I bought my machine with the cheapest drive and it turns out it's really a CD burner that can read DVDs. That's ok, this machine is for my dad and he never burns anything. Just means I had to use 9 CDs for the recovery set. -
hi robvia, probably this is a dv9500t specific problem....
I had done exactly what you did before I discovered your page. But looks like something in 9500t make is not compatible with the latest "raw" Intel driver. Which implies, very unfortunately, everytime Intel rolls out new X3100 driver, 9500t users may have to wait till HP publish the compatible patch....
so to better help other 9500 users to search for this info, i will jump back to my original post. I will also put the link of your page in that post so others can use for reference.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=125663
Thanks. -
First of all this thread is very helpful so two thumbs up!!!....
robvia--- thanks for the very helpful website and information that you have. I just finished installing the windows Xp in my new dv2500T notebook and everything works as it suppose to. So if anybody is trying to go back to Xp from a vista and have any question regarding drivers for dv2500T then let me know.
Thanks a lot guys.
Rahul -
can u post the link to all the necessary drivers for the 2500t?
-
Thanks for the kind words. I'm going for the Triple Play right now.
I'm following this guide.
http://www.hevnikov.com/blog/2006/11/13/triple-boot-xp-vista-ubuntu-with-single-boot-screen/
I used Killdisk to wipe the drive clean. It finds the sata drive from the boot CD, so if you want to completely wipe the drive, download the ISO, burn with Nero, and there you go.
http://killdisk.com/downloadfree.htm
Next I used Gparted to partition the drive. Again, I made a bootable CD and it finds the sata drive.
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=115843&package_id=173828
I was going to use Ubuntu 7.04 just like Ilya does, but Ubuntu 7.04 crashes on the install. So I tried the alternate text version of the installer. That works, but the partition menu is text based and kinda hard to work with. So I went with the stand alone version of Gparted from a bootable CD.
Gparted comes up, but pauses after loading a bunch of stuff. You have to type Forcevideo, Vesa, then 1280x1024 and then it starts.
I had something weird happen in the middle of Gparted. I couldn't type numbers into a box, so I rebooted, and my display went away. I had to remove memory, take out the battery (CR2032), put them back, then my display came back to life. This laptop has never been bumped or dropped, it was on a desk the entire time. Weird.
I have a 20 gig NTFS XP partition, 10 gig NTFS Vista partition, 70 gigs data FAT32, and then an Extended partition for Linux plus swap.
Now I'm installing XP into the first partition. This time I'm taking pictures. I've updated my web site with the Sata drivers if anyone needs them. And if you scroll all the way to the bottom, I have info about the Triple Play. -
dgcoupe--- I will post all the necessary drivers links as soon as i will get home in evening
-
The XP install went fairly smooth. I rebooted each time it asked and took pictures of the device manager window. The thing is, there will be many times when "Found New Hardware" windows appear. I usually cancel them, and install a driver. So getting an exact order with pictures will be hard to do. I don't think it really matters what order the drivers are installed after doing the Intel drivers.
Blue tooth installed fine this time, and I had the \SWSETUP disc in the drive. For the modem, it needed a file from the disc, and I had to manually surf to it. The directory on the disc is called \SWSETUP\Modem\X86 and then the file appears.
But basically I went in order of my web page rebooting along the way and eventually the computer found everything it needed. Now I have no yellow question marks.
Ubuntu installed, but I had to use the alternate text version. It loads Grub into the boot loader, but when I try to start Ubuntu, the Xserver shows a few boxes saying the graphics are messed up and dumps me at the command line. I tried to reconfigure with this command
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
It asks a bunch of questions, writes a file, then I reboot but get the same thing. So techincally Ubuntu did install, I just have to figure out how to configure the Xserver. -
First of all I used robvia's website to install most of the drivers. Also many of those drivers can be found in your SWSETUP folder that came with the notebook. Don't worry those drivers work perfectly find in XP. Only drivers that you need to download were UAA, sound, Network Adapter, touchpad, graphic card, chipset and SATA drivers.
Now you can find graphic card, chipset, SATA drivers, touchpad and UAA drivers from robvia's website and follow the instructions.
However you still need the sound card and Network Adapter drivers which you can find from the following links:
1. Sound Driver.

Hi Jollins. Someone named Matt was e-mailing me over the weekend, not sure if it's you. Anyway, Matt said...
"Again, Ubuntu Feisty (7.04) doesn't support our machines very well yet. The
i810, vesa, and intel drivers don't work for some reason in Feisty. The
"vesa" driver does work in Dapper (6.06), however. I've spent numerous hours
trying to get the X-server to work in Feisty, but with no luck."
Well, there you go, it's a graphics issue because Gparted goes to the command line and then I had to Forcevideo with Vesa. A cube buddy here at work said to try using standard VGA for the graphics.
A post in the Ubuntu forums would probably be best at this point.
If I wanted to try Ubuntu 6.06, I'd probably have to start all over. What happens if I try to install 6.06 over the 7.04 that was already there? What happens to the boot record? Who knows at this point. I don't mind starting over, but it's a bummer 7.04 won't work. -
Yeah, it's nitpicky, but really:
duel = I challenge you to a duel!
dual = I can boot two operating systems!

I have a DV6000t and a DV9000t Hp notebooks. NO Floppy
They both came with Vista.
Iam a very experienced user but this is a new problem for me.
I need to make both notebooks dual boot. Windows XP Pro SP2 does not recognize the drive.
I have downloaded the HP XP SATA drivers from HP.
All are .exe files.
I also got nLite v1.3.5 I get as far as the drivers page without a problem but I get stuck their.
Nlite asks for .inf files. I have .exe Files. It will not accept them.
How do I get nlite to load HP SATA drivers ?

on a dv 6000t all you have to do is go into the bios and disable the sata driver and you will be able to load windows xp

Welcome aboard MRGCAV. The Sata drivers you need can be found on the Intel site. You have the 945 chipset.
http://support.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/CS-022034.htm
If your laptop has integrated graphics, then you pick the GM chipsets. If your laptop has dedicated (Nvidia) graphics, then you pick the PM chipsets.
When you click on the Intel Storage Matrix Manager, pick your Operating System (XP Pro), then download. You'll have to do this on one of the laptops so you can extract the files. Look at the read me at the top of this page.
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/fil...fessional&lang=eng&strOSs=44&submit=Go%21
3. To install the Intel(R) Matrix Storage Manager,
double-click on the self-extracting and self-installing
setup file and answer all prompts presented.
4. By default, all installed files (readme.txt, help, etc.)
are copied to the following path:
<bootdrive>\Program Files\Intel\Intel(R) Matrix Storage Manager
You'll find 6 files in the Driver directory which are the INF files you need. Once you have the Driver directory, copy it to the machine where nLite is running, then you can slip stream the drivers. Your laptop has the ICH7M controller.
Or you can disable Sata in the Bios like others are saying. On the DV6500T, this can not be done and the drivers must be slipstreamed into the CD.
If you make the CD correctly, it will boot and you'll get to the partition menu in XP. After installing XP, run the EXE for the Chipset driver, the Graphics driver (if you have integrated), the wireless driver, and then the HP drivers. -

I had a yellow device in the Device Manager, which I assumed was my audio device. Wrong. It was the UAA device. After I tried every UAA and Conexant driver from HP and anywhere else I could find, I finally conceded and right clicked on the yellow exclamation, selected "Update Driver" and let Windows Update search the internet. It found an appropriate UAA driver, which then exposed both the Audio and Modem devices. I again let Windows Update search the internet and it found the drivers for both the Audio and Modem.
At this time I retried the recommended Conexant driver and it didn't work.So I went back to PCWizard to confirm I had the CXT5045 chip and searched around for the CXT5045. A linux blog suggested that the CXT5045 was the Audio device usually on the dv6000 series, so I tried the Conexant driver for the dv6000. And it worked!
So now I have the full set drivers for the dv2500t. I just got this laptop last week, so maybe there has been a tweak to hardware recently?
And many thanks to Robvia for putting together a most excellent guide that saved me hours of searching. And thanks to docangle and demnick for their help finding all the drivers.

Hey Rahul,
Which driver did you use for the Webcam. I have a Dv2500t and the only things left are the audio, which is a pain in the neck, the webcam and quickplay. -
Anyone for that matter?
-
Nevermind, Got it figured out. The whole setup depended on SP2 being installed. Once that was done, followed by a reinstallation of the MS UAA drivers, things fell into place automatically. The hardware wizards took care of pretty much everything. Thanks for this thread! And XP on this laptop is awesome. So much better than Vista.
-
Quick question
I DJ using soft/hardware that is best run with XP pro and in a few days I'm ordering a dv2500t
Heres one option I'm considering to run both vista and xp pro, someone please tell me if its practical:
2 HDDs, one with XP pro and one with the preinstalled vista home premium
Would it be easy enough to switch the drives out for gigs? or are the drives buried too much? or would a dual boot be the best way around the issue? -
If you don't need the hard disk space, dual booting would be much less of a pain. The drives are removable, but the mounts and screws really aren't meant to be doing it every day. You'll probably strip out the screws pretty quickly. You'll also need to either move the special HP drive adapter every time, or buy another one at the highway robbery price of $40 (for just a little piece of plastic).
Another option might be booting from a USB drive. -
My dv6500t is due in this coming week - has anyone actually installed the DriverHeaven Nvidia drivers on either a 6500 or 2500? Only reason I ask is I tried laptopvideo2go drivers on my ASUS F3T/7600/XP and had a few file-not-found errors plus SWAT 4 would not run at all. Rolled back to the ASUS driver and all is well. Unfortunately, as of 8/19 there still are no H-P XP drivers for the 8400 GS. TIA...

Hey guys, this is my first post and I'm in need of some help
I have been reading forums sites all week about installing XP over Vista on a laptop that I am just so confused now
lol Just this past weekend I purchased HP DV6568SE Special Edition (white) and I would like to install XP over Vista, as I'm not a fan of vista lol. The thing is I read so much that I don't know what is the right way to do this... I found many guides but they all have different driver downloads then what I need (Unless I'm wrong) So if its possible can anyone point me in the direction of how to install XP over Vista. Links or anything with the proper driver downloads for my DV6568SE would be great!
I also do not have a USB floppy drive so I would have to stream the drivers onto a CD.... but like I said any help would be really appreciated!
Thanks

Hey lilskaterpunk,
You could do worse than to look at the following site, hosted by a user of this thread
http://www.nogodforme.com/HPDV6500T.htm
Now on to my reason for being here, I am using a DV2535EA and have managed to install XP media centre edition and presumably all drivers...however I have 3 problems....
1. When the notebook goes into standby, either by closing the lid or by timing out, when i go back to it the screen wont turn back on..so I have to switch off and back on again
2. DVD's wont play in players such Windows Media Player or real player, presumably due to the fact that i get the error of the graphics drivers not being microsoft registered, it says the following in WMP:
"Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card."
3. Quickplay....hmmm...can i be reinstalled? What version is DV2500 and XP compatible (if any) and where do I get it from?
Any help is very much apprciated everyone...thanks in advance
Cheers, Craig
