You can try going through the "Programs and Features" control panel to remove what you don't want.

Been thinking about getting a version of the 6500 and was wondering how well does the 6500 /w the GeForce 8400M GS run HL2? How about TF2? I was hoping it plays both easily (near max settings, good fps)? Just to measure performance.. how well does it run Bioshock? Thanks for the info.

A couple of weeks ago I ordered a custom dv2600t from the HP website. It shipped last Thursday (from China) and made it all the way here by Monday. Now that's what I call fast shipping... and it was free! Here are my specs (Got the computer for ~$950 (tax included, free shipping))

    - HP Pavilion dv2500t notebook
    - Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit)
    - Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo processor T7500 (2.20 GHz, 4 MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
    - 14.1" WXGA High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1280 x 800)
    - 1GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm) (already had 2x1gb PC4200 DDR2)
    - 64MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS
    - HP Imprint Finish (Radiance) + Webcam + Microphone
    - Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection
    - 160GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
    - FREE Upgrade to LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-RW with Double Layer Support!!
    - No TV Tuner w/remote control
    - 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    - Microsoft(R) Works 8.0

Question: The bios is as barebones as they come. Is there a way to permanently allocate more than 64mb to the video card? I'd like to keep it permanently at 128 or 256mb...

I can play Team Fortess 2 on this laptop at its native rez (1280x800) with all low settings and get a respectable 20+ fps. The older source games are very playable, as are a suprisingly large number of games. It even plays the CoD4 demo at lowest settings at 1280x800 :) (Heck, I even got Oblivion to run at min. settings in native rez) Guess what I'm trying to say is that you can squeek by with some newer games and man-handle older games. It's a pretty decent little performer, but it runs remarkably hot (I've seen it get as high as 90C under load (194 farenheit)) There have been, however, no issues from overheating :) I just ordered a notebook-cooler to keep temps more reasonable when I'm gaming at home. The hard drive also gets hot when used.

Another question: Does anyone have any good recommendations for a carrying case for this notebook? I have a backpack equipped for a laptop, but I want a shoulder-mounted carrying case, too.

    hyde1;
I can play HL2 Epsiode 2 at settings "High/very High", with 8CSAA On, emm... FPS is around 25-30, which is fine for me! (Although I do get Slow Fps's where's there a lot of smock..)

Oh!!! and i tried the Crysis Demo... All Settings at MEDIUM with around 20-30FPS!!! I was supper happy of being able to check if it could play that game! 8400m Gs is soo under rated by people (erm, except 64mb version, lolll)

    My specs are core 2 duo 1.67ghz, 2GB ram,GeForce 8400mGS 128mb,... DV6565CA
    *Sorry4 mm bad english....

Does anyone here have a dv9500 which came with 64 bit Vista pre-installed?

I need 64 bit drivers for the fingerprint reader and webcam. Please help.

The drivers for both 32 and 64 bit are available on the HP web site.

Really? I've been searching the HP website for a couple days now and cannot find either.

    I've found these two pages:

    Drivers for Vista (32-bit)

    Drivers for Vista (64-bit)

Neither of which have drivers for the webcam or fingerprint reader. There is a fingerprint reader demo but no driver. I'd be very appreciative if you could give me a link to the driver for these two. Thanks.

Orev, thanks again for helping me so much. You've replied to a ton of my questions and your clean install thread was a lifesaver. I'm a webcam driver and fingerprint driver away from laptop perfection.

Please make suer to specify the letter on the end of your laptop model. Is it a dv9500 t or a dv9500 z? You have linked to the "z" model drivers.

If you search for the "dv9500t CTO" drivers, you will find the fingerprint reader drivers. You're right there's no webcam driver there. I don't remember if that was a separate driver or not.

If you have your swsetup folder, everything you need should be in there. The 32 and 64bit drivers come out of the same install package.

I didn't know this. I do have my swsetup folder saved, I just assumed those only had the 32 bit drivers. I'll test them tonight. Thanks again.

I only discovered this after I had downloaded the drivers for each arch. I compared the files and almost all of them were the same. The installer is smart enough to detect if it's running on 32bit or 64bit, and installs the correct driver.

You are correct again. The fingerprint reader installed correctly and the verisoft software works as well.

Thanks again for all your help. I'm much happier with the clean install 64-bit than with the original 32 bit install. Overall the system seems much more responsive.

Ok another dv9500 question, these are mechanical though.

I notice that the right side of my keyboard seems kinds "loose" for a better word. When I lightly touch the top right key (esc I think), not actually depressing the key, just touching, I notice the entire right edge keys go down with it, like the whole right edge is loose, especially compared with the left side keys that don't exhibit this. Anyone else notice this?

Also, when the laptop is closed with the lid/screen down, there seems to be a fair amount of play or movement of the screen, its not exactly tight, especially on the left side.

I'm probably being too picky I guess.

I had a few of these laptops, and each one had some strange physical abnormality. On one of the the remote was stuck in the slot, and on the one I have now the spring that pops out the dvd drive doesn't really work. It's bad quality control, but so far I haven't seen any functional problems on it.

If you think it's too far off, you have 21 days to return it.

I have a DV6500 for almost a month and I'm quite happy with it..until the 6700's came out 2 weeks later with the 256MB card....I negotiated a return and upgrade (along with a 250MB HD, man, that vista takes up a lot of space.) Its in Anchorage Alaska and heading my way...

Question...what does CTO mean after your unit model name?
